Big win for nursing students in Cross River State!

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Kingdom have just handed over three shiny 18-seater buses and equipment worth £3.8 million (over ₦‎7 billion) to the Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Calabar, Obudu, and Ogoja.

What Was Donated?

– 3 brand-new 18-seater buses (one for each college)

– Medical consumables and teaching mannequins

– Computers and ICT equipment

– Solar-powered inverters and generators

– Safety gear and furniture

– Lots of office and classroom materials

This is the biggest single donation ever received by nursing schools in the state!

Who Handed Over the Gifts?

The official ceremony took place yesterday at the Calabar International Conference Centre during the 2025 National Council on Health.

– Dr Pavel Ursula – WHO Country Representative

– Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate – Coordinating Minister of Health

– Dr Peter Odey – Deputy Governor (representing Governor Bassey Otu)

Why This Matters

More than 900 nursing and midwifery students plus their lecturers will now:

– Travel safely to clinical posting sites

– Learn with modern equipment

– Enjoy steady electricity from solar inverters

– Train in better classrooms

Dr Ursula said:

“This will improve the quality of training and produce better nurses and midwives for Cross River and Nigeria.”

Jill Fletcher from the British High Commission added:

“We are proud to help Nigeria build a stronger health workforce.”

Deputy Governor’s Promise

Dr Peter Odey thanked WHO and the UK and promised:

“Every single item will be used carefully so it lasts for many years and benefits many more students.”

Nursing students in Calabar, Obudu and Ogoja are already celebrating – and they deserve it!
