Ghana’s N&MC Fires Warning at Nurses: “Unprofessional Social Media Posts Can Cost You Your Licence!”

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (N&MC) has dropped a clear message to every nurse, midwife, and student in the country.

During the vibrant 2025 induction ceremony in Cape Coast, the Council repeated its strict rules on social media.

One bad post or video can lead to suspension or losing your licence forever.

This comes after too many viral clips of nurses dancing in uniforms, sharing patient secrets, or arguing online.

What the N&MC Registrar Said – Straight Talk

Mrs. Philomena A. N. Woolley told the new nurses:

  • “We used to use social media well. But now, what is happening is that a lot of us are writing things that are unprofessional.”
  • “If you are wrong and you are writing it on social media, you are even worse.”
  • “This is not professional. We write out social media and what have you, and we tell you that this is not professional.”

She stressed: Follow the Code of Ethics, or face the consequences.

Easy Rules to Live By on Social Media

The N&MC wants nurses to remember:

  1. No patient photos or stories (even if you blur the face)
  2. No fun videos in uniform that look silly or rude
  3. No fights with doctors, bosses, or the public online
  4. No sharing fake health tips or “cures”
  5. Always show respect, kindness, and smarts – everywhere

Break these, and you could end up in court or jobless. Ghana Health Service and hospitals are already acting on reports.

Bright Spots from the Ceremony

  • Over 3,000 nurses, midwives, and assistants got inducted nationwide – including 32 from Western and North regions.
  • Dr. Mary Waite Ofori-Abebrese took home the top award in Registered Community Mental Health Nursing.
  • Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye pledged better pay, training, and safe jobs.

Guest speaker Dr. Charity Oforiwaa Yeboah (from University of Health and Allied Sciences) added:

“Use tech to help patients, but never lose your heart and care.”

Why This Warning Can’t Wait

Social media is everywhere, but for nurses, it’s a minefield. One viral mistake can ruin years of hard work and hurt the trust people have in healthcare.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is the only group that can license you – and they’re serious about keeping standards high.

To every nurse: Pause before you post. Your career is worth it.
