How a UK-Based Nigerian Nurse Helped Prevent Disaster in NHS Oxygen Fire

FNA News, 18th July 2026

A UK-based Nigerian nurse has been praised for his rapid response and composure during a fire incident at an NHS hospital, helping to prevent the situation from escalating.

Emmanuel Ndubuisi, a registered nurse at Sunderland Royal Hospital in North East England, acted swiftly when a patient’s hair caught fire while she attempted to vape during oxygen therapy.

The incident highlights the serious dangers of using electronic cigarettes in oxygen-rich medical environments.

A Routine Shift Turns Critical

The event occurred in a side room at Sunderland Royal Hospital, where a woman in her 50s was receiving oxygen therapy. Within moments of using her vape, the oxygen-enriched atmosphere caused ignition, setting her hair ablaze.

Although oxygen is not flammable itself, it significantly accelerates fire spread, causing materials such as hair, bedding, and equipment to burn intensely and rapidly. The blaze was severe enough to melt the patient’s oxygen mask and tubing into the bedding and scorch the floor.

Decisive Action by Nurse Ndubuisi

Without hesitation, Emmanuel Ndubuisi and ward staff rushed into action. Ndubuisi helped disconnect the oxygen supply and used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. His quick intervention prevented the fire from spreading beyond the patient’s immediate area, protecting other patients on the ward.

The patient sustained burns to her head but survived the incident and continued receiving treatment. Fire alarms were activated, and the fire service attended the scene.

Recognition for Professionalism

Ndubuisi’s calm and decisive response under pressure earned recognition, including the Cavell Star Award, which honours healthcare professionals who demonstrate exceptional care, courage, and commitment beyond their normal duties.

Healthcare leaders commended the professionalism and teamwork shown during the emergency.

Important Safety Warning

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of smoking or vaping while on oxygen therapy. UK hospitals maintain strict no-smoking and no-vaping policies in clinical areas, particularly where oxygen is administered. Patients are routinely warned, yet such incidents continue to occur.

The Role of Vigilance in Nursing

Beyond routine care, nurses must remain prepared for sudden emergencies. Situational awareness, adherence to safety protocols, and rapid decision-making are critical skills that can make the difference in high-risk situations.

FNA Perspective

At Fellow Nurses Africa, we celebrate the dedication and competence of Nigerian nurses making significant contributions to healthcare systems worldwide. Emmanuel Ndubuisi’s actions reflect the professionalism, bravery, and quick thinking that many Nigerian nurses bring to the NHS and other global health services every day.

This case also reinforces the need for continuous patient education on oxygen safety and strict compliance with hospital policies.
