From academic pursuits to crowns and celebrations, nursing students at Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences in Jos are proving that campus life is about more than lectures and clinical training.
There is more to being a nursing student than textbooks, clinical postings and examinations. Sometimes, it is about stepping outside the classroom, embracing new experiences and celebrating the talents that make every student unique.
That spirit came alive at Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences, Jos, Plateau State, where students recently gathered for a pageantry that celebrated confidence, individuality and campus life.
Held on Saturday, 19 September 2026, the event was organised by the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG) and brought five nursing students into the spotlight.

For a day, the focus shifted from academic activities to celebrating student personalities and achievements beyond nursing training.
Meet Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences, Jos
Located in Rayfield, Jos, Plateau State, Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences is a relatively young institution working to establish its place in Nigeria’s nursing education landscape.
Established in 2024, the college describes its mission as preparing competent, compassionate and ethically responsible nursing professionals. The institution offers a four-year National Diploma and Higher National Diploma (ND/HND) nursing pathway, with two years allocated to each stage.
Named after Florence Nightingale, the pioneering figure in modern nursing, the college carries a name closely associated with compassion, professional dedication and service to humanity.
But beyond its academic mission, the institution is also developing a community of young people with different talents, interests and ambitions.
Its recent student pageantry offered a glimpse into that side of campus life.

Beyond the Classroom: When Nursing Students Take Centre Stage
Nursing education is widely recognised for its demanding academic schedule and clinical responsibilities.
Yet students also need opportunities to connect, explore their interests and create meaningful memories.
At Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences, the Students’ Union Government provided such an opportunity through a pageantry organised exclusively for nursing students.
Five contestants participated, showcasing their personalities and talents as they competed for different titles.
The event offered a platform for self-expression while encouraging participation in activities outside the classroom.
It also reflected the role of student leadership in creating a campus environment where learning and extracurricular engagement can coexist.
For students preparing to enter a profession built on human connection, opportunities to express themselves, develop confidence and engage with others can be valuable parts of their personal development.
Faces of the Week: Meet the Students Who Took Home the Crowns
Every celebration has its standout moments, and at Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences, three students earned special recognition.
Favour emerged as Miss Nightingale, claiming one of the competition’s principal titles.
Sele was crowned Face of Nursing, while Maya emerged as Mr Nightingale.
The three titleholders were selected from five contestants who participated in the event.
The occasion was not simply about who won.
It was also an opportunity for students to participate, express their individuality and enjoy recognition within their college community.
Through moments like these, students can celebrate achievements that might otherwise receive little attention outside their immediate circles.
More Than Scrubs and Stethoscopes: Why Campus Life Matters
When people think about nursing students, they often picture busy lecture halls, practical demonstrations, hospital wards and long hours of studying.
While these experiences remain central to nursing education, they represent only part of student life.

Behind the uniforms are young people with creative abilities, leadership potential, personal ambitions and interests that deserve encouragement.
Extracurricular activities provide spaces where those interests can be explored.
They can also offer opportunities to build friendships, develop communication skills and strengthen a sense of belonging.
The pageantry at Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences illustrates how student-led activities can contribute to a more engaging college experience.
For an institution established in 2024, such events may also help create shared memories and campus traditions as its student community continues to develop.

Campus Voices: Celebrating Student Participation
Reporting on the event for Fellow Nurses Africa, campus ambassador Grace Msendoo Akaakase highlighted the importance of student participation in extracurricular activities.
Her report emphasised how student-led initiatives can enrich campus life and give nursing students opportunities to explore experiences beyond academic and clinical responsibilities.
The event also reflected the contribution of the Students’ Union Government in encouraging student involvement.
Although nursing education must remain focused on developing safe and competent professionals, student life should also provide room for personal growth.
Academic excellence and extracurricular participation need not compete with each other. Both can contribute to a fulfilling educational experience.
A Young College, A Growing Campus Story
For Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences, the September pageantry represents one of the experiences shaping its developing student community.
As the institution grows, its story will be told not only through academic programmes and examinations, but also through the people who bring its campus to life.
Students, educators and student leaders all contribute to creating an environment in which learning, relationships and memorable experiences take shape.
The celebration is a reminder that the identity of a nursing institution extends beyond its buildings and curriculum.
It is also found in the ambitions, talents and contributions of its students.
Looking Ahead: Every Campus Has a Story Worth Telling
From the recognition of Miss Nightingale, Face of Nursing and Mr Nightingale to the participation of other contestants, the pageantry offered something worth celebrating.
And beyond this event, there are more stories waiting to be told.
Stories of academic determination, innovation, friendship, leadership, creativity and the everyday experiences of student nurses.
Through This Week on Campus, Fellow Nurses Africa is creating a platform to spotlight these experiences and celebrate the students behind them.
For Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences, this edition marks an opportunity to share a moment from its campus life with the wider nursing community.
Congratulations to Favour, Sele, Maya, all participating contestants and the Students’ Union Government for making the celebration possible.
To the students of Florence Nightingale College of Nursing Sciences, Jos: your talents matter, your experiences deserve recognition, and your stories are worth sharing.
Because the future of nursing is not only being shaped in classrooms and hospitals. It is also being shaped by the young people discovering who they are and what they can become.
