Meet the Nurse You Never Knew Built Davido’s Family Empire

Most people know David Adeleke, better known as Davido, as one of Africa’s biggest Afrobeats stars. Fewer know the full story of the family behind him. Even fewer realise that the foundation of the Adeleke family’s influence began not in music, business, or politics — but with a registered nurse in 1947.

That man was the late Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke, Davido’s paternal grandfather. He died in December 1983, but the professional and public path he carved decades earlier still shapes one of Nigeria’s most prominent families today.

A Quiet Beginning in Ede

Born on 27 December 1923 in Ede, Osun State, Raji Ayoola Adeleke came from a respected local family. His mother, Madam Adeboyin of Onilegogoro’s compound, was a prominent Iyalode (leader of market women) in the town. In an era when formal education and professional qualifications were still limited for many Nigerians, young Raji chose a path that would shape more than just his own life.

In 1947, he earned his registered nurse certificate from the Medical Department Nursing School. The following year, he became an early member of the pioneer union of Nigerian nurses. At a time when the nursing profession was still developing in the country, this was a significant achievement.

From Nursing to National Influence

Chief Adeleke did not remain only in healthcare. He moved into labour activism and public service. He later served as vice-president and director of the United Labour Congress of Nigeria and sat on the Federal Labour Advisory Council. He also chaired the Nigerian Red Cross in Ede.

His influence continued to grow. In the Second Republic, he was elected senator representing an Osun senatorial district (1979–1983). In 1976, he received the traditional title of Balogun of Ede, a mark of respect within his community.

What began as a nursing career in the 1940s expanded into labour leadership, politics, and traditional authority. He passed away in December 1983, leaving behind a well-organised political structure and a respected family name.

The Family That Followed

Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke was the father of Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, the businessman who later founded Pacific Holdings and Adeleke University. Through Adedeji, he became the grandfather of Davido and other members of a family that has since become prominent in entertainment, business, education, and politics. His sons included the late Isiaka Adeleke (Osun’s first civilian governor) and the current Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The modern Adeleke “empire” — spanning music, real estate, energy, higher education, and political office — did not appear overnight. Its earliest professional roots can be traced to a man who first trained as a nurse nearly eighty years ago and who died more than four decades ago.

Why This Story Matters

Stories like this one often remain in the background. Celebrity families are usually discussed through the lens of fame, wealth, or current events. Looking further back reveals something more interesting: the quiet professional choices and public service of earlier generations that made later success possible.

Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke began as a registered nurse in 1947 and went on to become a labour leader, senator, and the foundation of one of Nigeria’s most influential families. His journey proves that nursing is not a ceiling, it is a powerful launchpad. If you’re a nurse reading this, your compassion, skill, and discipline can take you into leadership, policy, business, politics, or any height you choose to reach.

Don’t stop learning, stay curious, and take the next bold step in your career. The same profession that shaped a dynasty can shape your extraordinary future too.

The late Chief Raji Ayoola Adeleke’s path from registered nurse to labour leader to senator offers a clear example of how one person’s determination and public contribution can shape a family’s trajectory for decades after they are gone.

The next time you hear Davido’s music or see news about the Adeleke family, it is worth remembering the nurse from Ede who started much earlier than most people realise — and whose influence continues long after his death in 1983.
