Viral Uwani General Hospital Video: Students Are Healthcare Technician Trainees, Not Nursing Students — Ezzy College Disclaimer

Enugu, Nigeria — 2 April 2026

The management of Ezzy Health Care Training College in Enugu has issued a formal disclaimer to clarify the status of two students featured in a widely circulated video that exposed poor working conditions at Uwani General Hospital.

In a statement released on Thursday, the college categorically stated that Miss Stella Makuochukwu Eze and Mrs Joy Chisimdili Ezeugwu are not nursing students. They are enrolled in the institution’s 18-month programme designed to qualify participants as health care assistants or technicians.

The video, uploaded on 28 March 2026 via Mrs Ezeugwu’s Facebook account, was recorded during the students’ first day of clinical posting at the state-owned hospital. It showed challenging night-shift conditions, including lack of electricity, running water, adequate sanitation, cleaning staff and reliable oxygen supply even as a woman was reported to be in labour.

College’s Position

The disclaimer, signed by the college management, described the content as expressing only the personal opinions of the two students and labelled their actions as “unprofessional”. It stressed that Ezzy Health Care Training College bears no liability for reactions to the viral video and does not substitute “professional advice if unfounded” for the duo.

The college also made clear that the students should not be referred to as nursing students of Ezzy International College of Nursing Sciences Enugu, which operates as a separate entity offering programmes accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

Context and Developments

The footage quickly gained traction on social media, prompting the Enugu State Government to issue a query to hospital authorities. Reports indicate that some repairs and improvements including restoration of basic services — were subsequently carried out at Uwani General Hospital.

However, the students reportedly faced repercussions, including removal from clinical duties and claims of indefinite suspension. The incident has sparked wider debate in Nigeria’s healthcare community about the balance between highlighting systemic deficiencies in public facilities and the professional risks for students and frontline workers who speak out.

Insights on Patient Safety and Whistleblowing

From a patient safety perspective, the conditions described in the video absence of power during night shifts, lack of water for basic hygiene, and inadequate oxygen raise legitimate concerns about the ability to deliver safe care, particularly in emergencies such as labour and delivery. Basic infrastructure failures in public hospitals remain a recurring challenge across many parts of Nigeria, often affecting outcomes for vulnerable patients.

Healthcare advocacy groups frequently argue that punishing those who expose such gaps can discourage transparency and delay necessary improvements. At the same time, professional regulatory bodies emphasise the importance of following established channels for raising concerns, protecting institutional reputation, and maintaining discipline during clinical training.

This case highlights the tension many trainee healthcare workers face: the desire to advocate for better conditions versus the fear of professional consequences. Experts in health systems strengthening suggest that clear whistleblower protection policies, combined with robust internal reporting mechanisms, could help address infrastructure deficits without undermining training programmes.

As of 2 April 2026, neither the Enugu State Government nor Uwani General Hospital management has issued a detailed public response to the college’s disclaimer or the suspension claims. The story continues to generate discussion online about accountability, infrastructure investment in public health facilities, and support for students highlighting service delivery gaps.

Ezzy Health Care Training College and Ezzy International College of Nursing Sciences function as distinct institutions under the broader Ezzy group. The former focuses on vocational healthcare assistant and technician training, while the latter provides formal nursing and midwifery education.

This article will be updated as further developments emerge.
