By Fellow Nurses Africa Correspondent
3 April 2026
A 500-level nursing student from the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has emerged as one of the national winners in the highly competitive Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG) programme organised by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Maduike Praise Oluwakemisola, a student in the Department of Nursing Science, is cofounder of AlutaMarket, a digital campus marketplace that addresses key student challenges including trading inefficiencies, scams, and limited access to goods and services on university campuses. The venture was selected as one of the 45 winning student ventures out of 65 finalists, qualifying for up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding.

The intensive S-VCG bootcamp ran from 26 to 29 March 2026 at the UNDP Innovation Hub in Ikoyi, Lagos. At the closing ceremony and awards presentation on 30 March 2026, the Federal Government announced grants totalling approximately ₦2.2–2.5 billion to the 45 successful ventures. Each winner receives substantial equity-free capital, mentorship, incubation support, and access to digital tools to scale their innovations.
AlutaMarket began full operations at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in January 2026 and has since expanded to other campuses, including contributions from FUOYE students. This success reflects the practical insights nursing students can bring to technology-driven solutions that enhance campus life and indirectly support healthcare access and community well-being.
Dual accreditation strengthens FUOYE’s healthcare programmes
In a separate achievement, the Radiography Department at FUOYE has secured full dual accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN). This milestone confirms the programme meets rigorous national academic and professional standards, further enhancing the university’s reputation in producing competent allied health professionals.
Broader implications for nursing innovation in Nigeria
Maduike’s accomplishment highlights how clinical experience gained during nursing training equips professionals with unique perspectives on real-world problems. By combining frontline healthcare insights with entrepreneurial innovation, nursing students are well-positioned to develop scalable solutions that address systemic challenges in education, healthcare delivery, and community services.
The S-VCG initiative demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s tertiary institutions into hubs of innovation and entrepreneurship. For the nursing community, this win serves as powerful encouragement that clinical expertise can extend far beyond patient care into impactful, technology-enabled ventures.
Fellow Nurses Africa congratulates Maduike Praise Oluwakemisola and her co-founder on this outstanding national achievement. We also commend the Vice-Chancellor, management team, and faculty of FUOYE for fostering an environment that supports both academic excellence and student-led innovation.
As Nigeria advances its healthcare system and knowledge-based economy, initiatives like the S-VCG and strong professional accreditations will continue to nurture the next generation of nurse innovators and leaders.
