FMC Makurdi NANNM Fires Back: Elegant Nurses Forum Allegations “Completely Untrue”
Makurdi, Benue State – January 8, 2026
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Makurdi has vehemently rejected allegations contained in a press statement issued by the Elegant Nurses Forum and published today by SaharaReporters, describing the claims as “completely untrue.”
The Elegant Nurses Forum had alleged that nurses across various Nigerian hospitals, including FMC Makurdi, were being coerced into performing cleaning and menial duties amid the ongoing indefinite strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).
In a strong rebuttal addressed to esteemed Nurse Leaders and the National Chairman, the Unit Secretary of NANNM FMC Makurdi declared:
“To the best of my knowledge the report about the FMC Makurdi Benue State is not true. I have not seen any Nurse carrying out the cleaner job or is being compelled to do so. I have not received any complaint or report that there was such an incident in FMC Makurdi and no Nurse has reported such treat.”>

He further noted that the Unit NANNM Chairman, upon being alerted, confirmed no such reports existed and has pledged to investigate the source of the alleged complaint.
The Unit Chairman corroborated the statement, expressing astonishment at the claims and questioning their validity:
“How in this present day and time can a CMD, MD, or any Hospital Management ‘force’ any Nurse to perform work that is outside of his or her responsibility? I am yet to see that happen in my jurisdiction.”>
He categorically stated:
- No such report has emanated from the leadership or Congress of NANNM/FHI, FMC Makurdi.
- Proper channels would have been followed if any nurse had a genuine grievance, and no individual has come forward to the Unit EXCO.
The Chairman also raised concerns about the Elegant Nurses Forum, asking for clarification on its legitimacy and cautioning against unverified claims that distract from professional discourse.
The original statement from the Elegant Nurses Forum claimed to have received a “formal complaint” from FMC Makurdi over ten days ago, alongside reports from Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Ogun State and other facilities.
No responses have yet been issued from the other hospitals mentioned.
This controversy unfolds against the backdrop of the prolonged JOHESU strike, which has disrupted sanitation and support services in public hospitals nationwide, exacerbating workload tensions in the health sector.
