Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Wythenshawe Hospital, has been approached for comment.
This incident is part of a disturbing surge in violence against nurses across UK hospitals, highlighting systemic failures that demand urgent action. According to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), physical assaults on A&E staff in England have nearly doubled—from 2,093 in 2019 to 4,054 in 2024—with incidents nearly tripling at some trusts like Southmead Hospital in Bristol (from 83 to 232) and rising over 500% at Maidstone Hospital in Kent (from 13 to 89).
The incident is the latest in a series of assaults on NHS nursing staff in the United Kingdom, where reported physical attacks have risen significantly in recent years, particularly in emergency and acute care settings.
Fellow Nurses Africa is monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as they become available.
