Over 6,000 Nurses and Midwives in Ghana Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives has threatened industrial action if the government does not pay their 11-month salary arrears.

The coalition represents more than 6,000 members across Ghana.

They began work in December 2024.

Some members have received only one month’s salary.

Around 300 have received no payment at all.

Coalition leader Stephen Takyiah said the partial payments fall short of what is owed and do not reflect the sacrifices made by frontline workers.

The group fears the situation will worsen as their extended financial clearance expires in December.

They note that more than 7,000 nurses and midwives who started receiving salaries in April 2025 have had all arrears paid in full, while their group of 6,261 has been left behind.

Some were validated for full arrears in November but received only one month’s pay.

The coalition held a press conference in Ejisu, Ashanti Region, where they accused the Ministry of Health of failing to release a promised payment plan after November salaries.

They also criticised a ministry press release claiming all arrears had been paid.

The nurses and midwives called for immediate communication from the Ministries of Health and Finance, plus full payment of arrears.

One member, Michael Makafui, said the delays have caused hardship with rent, family needs and transport.

He sometimes walks home from Komfo Anokye Hospital to Santasi because he cannot afford fares.

No response has been issued by the Ministry of Health or Ministry of Finance at the time of this report.
