The world is evolving every day. New inventions are being developed, new strains of infections are being discovered and new treatment regimes are coming up. As health professionals, nurses require high levels of expertise and experience to successfully keep up with the pace. This is why we need a relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in nursing is an ongoing process where nurses continuously train themselves to maintain, improve, and broaden their knowledge, expertise, and competence throughout their professional lives. This helps them to stay updated with the latest advancements, grow personally and professionally, improve patient care and have better job satisfaction.

The efficiency and employability of a nurse depends largely on his or her CPD portfolio. This is why every nurse must strive to consciously and constantly build this portfolio. Here are 3 important ways to enhance your CPD portfolio as a nurse; Identify, Invest, Invite.

1. IDENTIFY YOUR NEEDS.

You have to start by reflecting on your practice and review the areas you would want to improve on. Then you have to set SMART goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound to address these areas of needs while creating an action plan for each of them.

2. INVEST IN LEARNING.

After identifying your needs and drafting your action plans, the next thing is to invest time in activities that would help to improve learning and development including; • Continuous clinical practice for improved productivity. • Undertaking formal academic programs. • Attending workshops, seminars and conferences. • Taking online courses. • Actively contributing in research works involving patient care.

3. INVITE OTHERS TO HELP

As nurses, communication is an important part of our job. This should also be incorporated in building our CPD portfolio. We can do this by reaching out to people for reviews, finding mentors and coaches that would help with career growth, joining professional groups like Fellow Nurses Africa where we can get updated information about how to navigate our nursing journey.

Every nurse wishes to improve his or her professionalism and productivity, but only a few are willing to put in the work to make it happen.
