UK-Based Indian Nurse Wins $250,000 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award as Nigeria’s Oluchi Finishes in Global Top 10

Kochi, India — 12 September 2026

Dr. Agimol Pradeep, a UK-based Indian nurse, has been crowned the winner of the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2026, taking home the $250,000 grand prize after emerging from more than 134,000 nurses across 214 countries and economies.

The announcement was made during a glittering ceremony in Kochi, Kerala, bringing together global nursing leaders, healthcare executives and policymakers to celebrate one of the world’s most prestigious nursing honours.

For Nigeria, the ceremony was also a moment of pride as Oluchi Angel Okoi secured a place among the Top 10 finalists, reinforcing the growing global recognition of Nigerian nursing excellence.

The Nurse Behind the Winning Story

Dr. Pradeep serves as a Senior Transplant Coordinator at King’s College Hospital and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford in the United Kingdom.

Her work has focused on tackling healthcare inequalities, particularly improving access to organ and stem-cell donation among South Asian communities, where donor shortages have historically reduced transplant opportunities for many patients.

Rather than limiting her work to research alone, she helped co-found Upahaar, a community-driven initiative that has registered more than 10,000 stem-cell donors, turning advocacy into measurable lifesaving impact.

Beyond transplantation, her efforts have also helped shape regulatory changes that enabled internationally trained nurses to re-enter the UK workforce, addressing critical staffing shortages while supporting thousands of overseas nurses in rebuilding their careers.

A Promise to Invest Back into Nursing

Following her victory, Dr. Pradeep pledged to use the award to expand her impact rather than celebrate personal success alone.

She announced that half of the prize money would be invested in growing the Upahaar initiative internationally, while another portion would support nursing education, leadership development and training for future nurse advocates and changemakers.

Nigeria’s Oluchi Makes the Global Top 10

Although the ultimate prize went to Dr. Pradeep, Oluchi Angel Okoi’s selection as one of the Top 10 nurses in the world marks a significant achievement for Nigeria’s nursing profession.

She stood alongside finalists from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong SAR, India, Colombia, Namibia and Papua New Guinea, reflecting the truly global nature of this year’s competition.

For Nigerian nurses, Oluchi’s achievement represents more than an individual milestone. It demonstrates that innovations, leadership and community impact from Africa continue to earn recognition on the world’s biggest healthcare stages.

Why the Award Matters

Established by Aster DM Healthcare, the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award has become one of the highest-paying nursing awards worldwide, celebrating professionals whose work extends beyond bedside care into research, education, innovation, leadership and community service. Aster Guardians

Previous winners have included:

  • 2025: Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti (Ghana)

  • 2024: Maria Victoria Juan (Philippines)

  • 2023: Margaret Helen Shepherd (United Kingdom)

  • 2022: Anna Qabale Duba (Kenya)

As the 2026 edition concludes, Nigeria leaves the competition without the grand prize but with another powerful reminder that its nurses are increasingly shaping conversations about healthcare leadership on the global stage.
