A 44-year-old man who violently assaulted an orthopaedic doctor at Aigio General Hospital on Friday has died.

The man, a boxer and fitness trainer with a criminal record including drug-related convictions, attacked the doctor during a consultation in the emergency department.

He punched the doctor repeatedly in the face and body for up to 30 minutes, causing deep wounds to the eyebrow requiring stitches, plus injuries to the nose and head.

The doctor told Greek television network MEGA that he had never met the man before.

The attacker said “I don’t like your face” and claimed he thought the doctor was going to hit him.

Police opened a case and searched for the man under the flagrant offence procedure after he fled the hospital.

On Sunday the man returned to Aigio Hospital with his brother, complaining of severe pain.

He died shortly after arrival despite doctors’ efforts.

An alternative report states an EKAB ambulance brought him to the hospital already deceased on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities are investigating the cause of death. A forensic examination is expected to determine if it relates to the health issue he sought treatment for on Friday.

The Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN) president Michalis Giannakos confirmed the death and said the man had been involved in similar incidents in the past.

The hospital doctor said the attacker may have been under the influence of alcohol or narcotics and showed irrational behaviour.
