Aro Abeokuta Nursing Crisis: NANNM Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Reinstate Suspended Student

Abeokuta, Nigeria – The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Aro branch, has escalated the ongoing nursing crisis at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, with a decisive resolution issued today, Friday, July 18, 2025, at 4:34 PM BST.

This follows the alleged assault of student nurse Ogunjobi Oluwaseyi Samuel by senior doctor Dr. A.A. Majekodunmi on June 30, 2025, and his subsequent suspension, which has sparked widespread outrage and protests.

In an emergency congress held today, NANNM demanded that hospital management unconditionally withdraw Oluwaseyi’s suspension within 24 hours, reinstate all student nurses removed from clinical postings, and secure a formal apology from the alleged assailant. The resolution, signed by Unit Secretary Comrade Olayemi Sulaimon and other officials, also sternly warns Dr. E.O. Majekodunmi to cease bullying and insulting behavior toward staff, threatening industrial action if the demands are unmet.

This comes after sources confirmed to Fellow Nurses Africa that the June 30 incident saw Dr. Majekodunmi allegedly strike Oluwaseyi’s leg with a chair and hurl abusive language during a ward round dispute over chairs.

The hospital’s suspension letter, dated July 17, 2025, followed an investigative panel’s findings, ordering Oluwaseyi to vacate the premises. In response, nurses have been protesting since earlier today, singing protest songs and displaying banners reading “Justice for Oluwaseyi” and “End Nurse Abuse,” highlighting growing concerns over nurse safety in healthcare. The Neuropsychiatric Hospital has yet to issue an official statement.

Fellow Nurses Africa continues to monitor this nurse assault investigation, with further updates to follow on our X page and website. Stay tuned for the latest on this unfolding crisis.
