In a historic achievement for Ghana’s healthcare community, Mrs. Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has been elected as the Africa Region Representative to the Board of the International Council of Nurses (ICN). The election took place today at the ICN Congress 2025, held in Helsinki, Finland, from June 9-13, under the theme “Nursing Power to Change the World.”

This landmark victory marks a proud moment for Ghanaian nurses and midwives, as Mrs. Ofori Ampofo steps into a pivotal role to represent Africa’s nursing community on a global stage. The ICN Congress, attended by over 7,000 nurses from more than 130 countries, is a critical platform for shaping the future of nursing and midwifery worldwide.
Mrs. Ofori Ampofo, a seasoned nurse educator with over 25 years of experience in Ghana’s health sector and 15 years in trade unionism, brings a wealth of expertise to the ICN Board. Her leadership as GRNMA President, coupled with her past roles as Chairperson of the West African Health Sector Unions Network (WAHSUN) and the Ghana PSI National Coordinating Council, positions her as a formidable advocate for nurses and midwives across Africa.
This election underscores Ghana’s growing influence in global healthcare and highlights the GRNMA’s commitment to advancing professional standards, promoting health equity, and addressing critical issues like maternal and child health, environmental crises, and nursing education.
As the Africa Region Representative, Mrs. Ofori Ampofo will work to strengthen National Nursing Associations (NNAs), promote sustainable healthcare policies, and amplify the voices of African nurses in global health discussions. Her election follows in the footsteps of other African nursing leaders, such as Rwanda’s Andre Gitembagara, who previously served as an ICN Board member for the Africa Region.
The GRNMA and the entire African nursing community celebrate this milestone, which reflects the power of unity and leadership in transforming healthcare. As the ICN Congress continues, nurses worldwide are rallying to address pressing challenges, including planetary health, professional development, and equitable access to care.
