UMTH’s Grand International Nurses Week 2025: Celebrating Nurse of the Year and Nursing Excellence

In a spectacular display of unity, professionalism, and pride, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) recently hosted a historic International Nurses Week 2025 celebration, a landmark event that brought together nursing professionals, students, and dignitaries to honor the indispensable role of nurses in healthcare and national development. Under the dynamic leadership of Nurse Halima, Unit Chairperson of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), the event was a resounding success, showcasing the strength and dedication of the nursing community.

Held under the inspiring theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens the Economy,” the celebration highlighted the critical economic and societal contributions of nurses. The event featured a compelling keynote address by Associate Professor Dr. Robert Kever, whose thought-provoking lecture explored how empowering nurses drives economic growth and strengthens healthcare systems. His insights underscored the need to invest in nursing education, welfare, and professional development to secure a healthier future for all.

A Gathering of Nursing Luminaries

The event was graced by an impressive lineup of distinguished guests, reflecting the significance of the occasion. Notable attendees included:

  • Dr. Juliana Bitrus RN, former Borno State Commissioner of Health and current Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment.
  • Prof. Ahidjo, Chief Medical Director of UMTH.
  • Nr. Mohammed Yaro, State Chairman of NANNM.
  • Nr. Wakawa, State Secretary of NANNM.
  • Nr. Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) State Focal Point.
  • Nr. Musa Mamman, a revered former National Leader of NANNM.

Their presence emphasized the collaborative spirit of the nursing profession and its vital role in shaping healthcare policies and practices.

Nurse of the Year: A Beacon of Excellence

A highlight of the celebration was the prestigious Nurse of the Year award presented to Nr. Bintu Muhammad, recognized for her outstanding contributions to patient care and professional excellence. Her dedication serves as an inspiration to nurses across Nigeria and beyond. The event also celebrated other awardees for their remarkable achievements, reinforcing the culture of excellence within the profession.

The presence of Nr. Kolomi, fondly known as the Ambassador of UMTH Nurses, added a special touch to the occasion, symbolizing the pride and unity of the UMTH nursing community.

A Celebration of Unity and Aspiration

The event saw enthusiastic participation from both senior and junior nurses, alongside a vibrant turnout of nursing students. Nr. Emmanuel Gema, National President of the Nigerian Universities Nursing Students Association (NUNSA), delivered a message of solidarity, bridging the gap between current nursing leaders and the next generation of caregivers. Academic stakeholders, including Associate Professor Babayo M. Tukur, Head of Department, Nursing Science at the University of Maiduguri, and Dr. Balaji Maigari, lent their support, highlighting the importance of academic and professional collaboration.

The UMTH Nursing Department, led by its dedicated head, played a pivotal role in ensuring the event’s success. Special commendations were extended to Nr. Gadzama, UMTH Unit Secretary, and Nr. Zakariya, Unit Public Relations Officer, for their tireless efforts in coordinating a seamless and impactful program.

A Vision for the Future

The 2025 International Nurses Week at UMTH was more than a celebration—it was a powerful statement of the nursing profession’s commitment to excellence, unity, and progress. The event underscored the importance of nurturing nurses not only as caregivers but as key drivers of economic and social development. By fostering professional growth, advocating for better working conditions, and celebrating achievements, UMTH is paving the way for a stronger, more resilient nursing workforce.

As the global healthcare landscape evolves, events like these remind us that nurses are the backbone of quality care. Their dedication, compassion, and expertise continue to transform lives and shape the future of healthcare.
