NANNM and NMCN Discuss Nursing Reforms, DNSc Certification, and Internship Centralization

In a significant move toward advancing the nursing profession in Nigeria, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) held a strategic meeting with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) on May 2, 2025, at the NANNM Secretariat, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

The meeting followed the resolutions of the April 2025 National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and was part of the ongoing reform agenda led by Comrade Haruna Mamman, NANNM National President. Several critical issues affecting the nursing profession were discussed, including:

  • Accreditation and proliferation of nursing colleges
  • The status and regulation of community nursing and midwifery
  • Centralization of the nursing internship program
  • Progression from BNSc to Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc)

The proposed upgrade from Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) to Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc) was a major focus, reflecting a shared vision to elevate the academic and professional standing of Nigerian nurses to meet global standards.

In attendance were top nursing leaders, including Dr. T.A. Shettima, NANNM Secretary; Alhaji Ndagi Alhassan, Acting Registrar of NMCN; Chief Obasi Bornbless, Deputy National President; members of the National Administrative Council (NAC), and directors from the NMCN.

Details of the resolutions reached will be made available in an official release.

This collaboration marks another step toward strengthening the profession and advocating for nurses across the country.
