NANNM Gives Tinubu 15 Days to Address Nurses’ Welfare or Face Strike
Abuja, Nigeria – July 10, 2025 – The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has issued a heartfelt yet firm 15-day ultimatum to President Tinubu’s administration, demanding urgent action to address the welfare of nurses and midwives.
Following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday, July 10, 2025, NANNM rejected a recent government circular on health workers’ allowances, calling it “grossly inadequate and discriminatory” for failing to honor the sacrifices of Nigeria’s nursing workforce.

Signed by National President Comrade Nurse Haruna Mamman and General Secretary Dr. T. A. Shettima, the NEC’s communiqué voiced deep frustration with the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) circular. Despite ongoing engagements with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, critical demands remain unmet, leaving nurses and midwives feeling undervalued. These demands include:
- Gazetting the 2016 Nurses Scheme of Service.
- Implementing the 2012 National Industrial Court judgment.
- Reviewing professional allowances to match economic realities.
- Recruiting more nursing staff and providing modern equipment.
- Establishing a nursing department in the Federal Ministry of Health.
- Including nurses in health policy-making and institutional boards.
- Centralizing internship postings for graduate nurses.
- Recognizing consultancy opportunities for nurses and midwives.
NANNM warned that if these demands are not addressed by July 29, 2025, a 7-day warning strike will begin, potentially disrupting healthcare services across Nigeria. The association called on President Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Assembly, and the public to act swiftly to prevent this crisis, stressing that quality healthcare depends on fair treatment and support for nurses.
