Thousands of Nursing Students Face Last-Minute Timetable Changes as NMCN Announces New Exam Dates

FNA News, Lagos Nigeria, 29th October 2025.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has revised the timetable for its November 2026 Professional Examinations, citing an exceptionally large number of candidates and concerns over congestion at examination centres nationwide.

The changes, announced just one week before the first examination, affect candidates enrolled in General Nursing and Post-Basic Nursing programmes, including Public Health Nursing.

In a circular dated 27 October 2026, the Council announced that the two categories of examinations would no longer be conducted simultaneously, as previously practised.

Instead, General Nursing candidates will sit their examinations from 3 to 6 November, while Post-Basic Nursing candidates will take theirs from 10 to 13 November 2026.

The announcement comes at a crucial time for candidates making final preparations for the professional examinations.

Why NMCN Changed the Examination Timetable

According to the Council, the decision followed concerns about the exceptionally large number of candidates expected to participate in the examinations across Nigeria.

The regulatory body explained that separating the two examination categories would help prevent congestion, strengthen quality assurance and maintain high operational standards at examination centres.

Previously, General Nursing and Post-Basic Nursing examinations were conducted concurrently.

However, the latest directive introduces separate examination periods for both categories.

Although the Council described the number of candidates as exceptionally large, it did not disclose the exact number registered for the November examinations.

New NMCN Examination Dates for November 2026

The Council has released the following schedule for eligible candidates.

General Nursing

  • Tuesday, 3 November 2026: Paper I
  • Wednesday, 4 November 2026: Paper II
  • Friday, 6 November 2026: CAOSCE

Post-Basic Nursing, Including Public Health Nursing

  • Tuesday, 10 November 2026: Paper I
  • Wednesday, 11 November 2026: Paper II
  • Friday, 13 November 2026: CAOSCE

The revised timetable applies to all eligible candidates and institutions offering the affected nursing programmes.

NMCN Issues Strict Warning to Candidates

Alongside the timetable changes, the Council has introduced strict instructions concerning punctuality and examination conduct.

Candidates must arrive at their designated examination centres at least one hour before the scheduled commencement of their examinations.

The Council warned that late arrival would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

It also cautioned that possession of prohibited items constitutes examination malpractice and could attract severe regulatory sanctions.

Heads of nursing institutions have been directed to communicate the circular to their candidates and ensure full compliance.

What the Last-Minute Changes Mean for Nursing Students

For students approaching the final stage of their professional training, examination schedules are an important part of academic preparation.

Changes announced shortly before an examination can require candidates to review their study plans, travel arrangements and other commitments.

General Nursing candidates, in particular, now face an earlier examination period, beginning on 3 November.

While the Council’s decision is intended to improve examination management, the short interval between the announcement and the first paper makes timely communication essential.

Institutions will need to ensure that every affected candidate receives the revised timetable and understands the requirements before examination day.

FNA Analysis: Examination Quality Must Go Hand in Hand With Student Welfare

The decision to separate the examinations highlights a wider issue in Nigeria’s nursing education system: the need to match examination arrangements with the number of candidates seeking professional qualifications.

Managing large-scale professional examinations requires adequate facilities, effective coordination and careful planning.

For a profession where clinical competence and patient safety are fundamental, maintaining credible professional assessments is essential.

However, examination quality should not come at the expense of clear communication and student welfare.

Candidates deserve timely information, fair examination conditions and sufficient opportunities to prepare without unnecessary uncertainty.

The Council’s decision may help ease pressure on examination centres, but its effectiveness will depend on how well the revised arrangements are implemented.

Ensuring that candidates understand the changes, examination centres are adequately prepared and assessment standards remain consistent will be important to the success of the November examinations.

What Candidates Should Do Before Their Examinations

Fellow Nurses Africa advises candidates to confirm their updated examination dates with their respective institutions.

Students should also verify their examination centres, plan to arrive early and familiarise themselves with the Council’s examination regulations.

Candidates are encouraged to seek clarification from their institutions about any uncertainty concerning examination arrangements.

The circular was signed by Ndagi Alhassan, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

As the November examinations approach, the priority remains ensuring that all eligible candidates receive accurate information and are given a fair opportunity to demonstrate their professional competence.
