Sanwo-Olu Commissions New Hostel for Nursing Students at Lagos State College of Nursing, Igando

The new facility can accommodate more than 250 students and includes training and registration facilities, solar power infrastructure and 24-hour CCTV surveillance.

LAGOS, Nigeria — Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned a new ultra-modern hostel facility at the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, as part of efforts to improve student welfare and strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce.

The facility, commissioned on Friday, is designed to accommodate more than 250 nursing students and provides a more secure and conducive environment for students undergoing professional training. The hostel is equipped with training and registration facilities, solar power infrastructure and round-the-clock CCTV surveillance, among other amenities.

Sanwo-Olu: Hostel is an investment in healthcare

Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the project should be viewed as more than an accommodation facility.

He described the investment as part of the state’s broader commitment to human capital development, student welfare and the quality of healthcare education.

The governor also stressed the important role nurses play in meeting the healthcare needs of Lagos’ growing population, highlighting the need to strengthen the pipeline of trained healthcare professionals. Sanwo-Olu further disclosed that the state is pursuing approval for the establishment of a University of Medical Sciences, which he said would expand Lagos’ capacity to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.

LASCON seeks greater capacity to train nurses

The Provost of the Lagos State College of Nursing, Dr Ayodeji Ogunmuyiwa, said the new hostel would help strengthen the institution’s capacity to train more nurses.

She noted that increased training capacity is particularly important amid concerns about healthcare workforce shortages in Lagos and Nigeria.

Ogunmuyiwa also highlighted recent developments at the college, including improvements to its information and communication technology infrastructure and computer-based testing facilities.

The Provost appealed for further support for the institution, including additional buses, qualified personnel and placement opportunities for graduating students.

Why the investment matters

For nursing education, infrastructure extends beyond classrooms and clinical facilities.

Safe accommodation can influence students’ ability to rest, study and participate fully in their training. For institutions preparing healthcare professionals, therefore, investment in student welfare is closely connected to the wider goal of producing a competent and resilient workforce.

The new LASCON hostel represents a tangible investment in that training environment.

However, infrastructure alone cannot address the broader challenges facing nursing education and workforce development. Sustained investment in faculty, clinical placements, accreditation, equipment, student support and employment pathways will also be essential if increased training capacity is to translate into a stronger healthcare workforce.

For Lagos, the commissioning of the hostel marks another step in the state’s ongoing investment in nursing education and healthcare human resources.
