24 Hours to the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award: All Eyes on Nigerian Nurse Oluchi as She Eyes the $250,000 Prize

From more than 134,000 registrations across 214 countries and economies to a final group of 10, Nigerian nurse Oluchi Angel Okoi is now just hours away from finding out whether she will be crowned the 2026 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award winner.
The countdown is almost over.
In less than 24 hours, the global nursing community will turn its attention to Kochi, India, where one nurse will be crowned the winner of the 2026 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award and receive the prestigious US$250,000 prize.
Among the 10 finalists is Nigeria’s Oluchi Angel Okoi, whose journey has captured the attention of nurses and healthcare professionals across the country.
The question now is simple: Will she bring the prize home to Nigeria?
From 134,000 Nurses to Just 10
Okoi’s place in the final 10 is already a remarkable achievement.
She was selected from more than 134,000 registrations submitted by nurses across 214 countries and economies, making the 2026 edition one of the largest global competitions of its kind. The finalists were selected through a multi-stage evaluation process, with Ernst & Young LLP appointed as the award’s independent process advisers.

Her name now sits alongside nine other nurses representing countries including the United Kingdom, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, India, Colombia, Namibia and Papua New Guinea.
But for Nigeria, Okoi’s presence in the final 10 carries particular significance.
Who Is Oluchi Angel Okoi?
Okoi is a Nigerian nurse whose professional work extends beyond conventional bedside care.
She serves as Head of Nursing at the Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF) Rape Crisis Centre in Lagos, where she works with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.
Her area of practice includes trauma-informed and survivor-centred care, forensic nursing, medical examinations, documentation of evidence and medico-legal support. Her story demonstrates one of the central themes of modern nursing: the profession’s influence can extend well beyond the hospital ward.
A Nurse Using Nursing to Support Survivors and Justice
Okoi’s work sits at the intersection of nursing, forensic practice and advocacy.
The Aster Guardians platform has highlighted her contribution to supporting survivors of gender-based violence, noting her work in forensic expertise and legal advocacy. Aster has also highlighted an 80% justice-attainment rate associated with her work.
It is this broader impact that has helped place her among the 10 nurses now competing for the global honour.
For Okoi, the award is therefore not simply about personal recognition.
It has also placed issues such as forensic nursing, survivor-centred healthcare, sexual and gender-based violence response and the role of nurses in medico-legal processes on an international stage.
Can She Win?
That is the question Nigerians are asking as the final hours approach.
The answer remains unknown.
Ten exceptional nurses have made it to the final stage, but only one will receive the grand title and US$250,000 prize.

Public voting for the finalists opened in August and closed on 31 August 2026. The result will now be announced at the grand finale in Kochi.
The ceremony is scheduled for 12 September 2026 from 4pm IST at the Grand Hyatt, Kochi, India.
So, while Nigerians may hope for the best, the final decision is now in the hands of the award process.
Nigeria Has Been Here Before — But This Is Different
The significance of Okoi’s achievement becomes even clearer when viewed against the history of the award.
The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award was established in 2022. Its inaugural winner was Kenyan nurse Anna Qabale Duba.
In 2025, the award went to Ghanaian oncology nurse Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, who received the US$250,000 prize for her contribution to cancer care.
Africa has therefore already produced winners.
Now, Nigeria has its own finalist.
Could 2026 become Nigeria’s year?

For Nigerian nurses, the significance of Saturday’s announcement goes beyond the money.
The US$250,000 prize is substantial, but so is the international recognition attached to the award.
Okoi’s journey has already demonstrated that Nigerian nurses can compete at the highest level of global nursing recognition.
Whether she ultimately wins or not, making the Top 10 from more than 134,000 registrations is an extraordinary achievement.
But there is still one question that will remain unanswered for another few hours:
