WHO Partners LASUCOM to Elevate Nursing Training and Research in Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria – September 22, 2025.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has today made its third visit this year to the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), reinforcing a dynamic partnership to transform nursing education and research in Lagos. This latest engagement, focused on strategic discussions and facility inspections, underscores WHO’s commitment to supporting LASUCOM’s Nursing Programme with impactful donations and resources.
Welcomed by LASUCOM’s Provost, Professor Olufemi Idowu, the WHO delegation explored key initiatives to strengthen nursing training. Professor Idowu highlighted critical needs, including a Research Trials Centre to drive evidence-based nursing practice, solar power installations for reliable classroom and laboratory operations, an upgraded Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Centre, buses for staff and student mobility, and high-fidelity mannequins for advanced simulation-based training.
“These interventions will empower our Nursing Programme to deliver exceptional training, foster cutting-edge research, and improve healthcare outcomes across Lagos and Nigeria,”
Professor Idowu shared, emphasizing LASUCOM’s dedication to maximizing every resource for real-world impact.
The discussions also revisited the need for enhanced staff capacity through WHO-supported staff exchanges and visiting consultants, which would bring global expertise to elevate the training of future nurses.
Following the meeting, the delegation, joined by Professor Idowu and College Engineer Engr. Odusanmi K.O., toured facilities earmarked for these transformative upgrades.
This ongoing collaboration between WHO and LASUCOM signals a bright future for nursing education in Lagos, with a shared vision of building a robust, research-driven programme that equips nurses to meet Nigeria’s healthcare challenges head-on.
