Former Nursing Assistant Indicted for Negligent Homicide After Patient’s Fatal Fall in Baton Rouge

A Baton Rouge grand jury has indicted Diamond Johnson, a 34-year-old former nursing assistant, on one count of negligent homicide after a patient died following a fall at Jefferson Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The indictment, handed down on October 2, 2025, came after months of investigation by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. According to investigators, the incident occurred on June 14, 2024, when Johnson attempted to move a patient from a chair to a bed using a hydraulic lift.

Authorities allege that the patient slipped out of the sling and landed on the lift’s base, sustaining severe blunt-force injuries. The woman reportedly became unresponsive for nearly 40 minutes before being pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was complications from the fall.

Attorney General: “We Must Protect Those Who Cannot Protect Themselves”

In a statement following the indictment, Attorney General Liz Murrill described the case as “tragic but necessary to pursue.”

“These cases are very difficult,” Murrill said. “But my job as Attorney General is to protect the citizens of this state — especially those who can’t protect themselves. The grand jury agreed that the care provided fell short of the duty owed to this patient.”

Johnson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison following the indictment. Officials confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed pending further review.

Negligence Allegations and Nursing Oversight

The case has renewed discussions around patient safety and staff training in long-term care facilities. Nursing advocates have called for stronger supervision standards, especially for caregivers operating mechanical lifts and mobility aids.

While Jefferson Manor has not yet released an official statement, the indictment has reignited debate about accountability in nursing homes and the need for continuous professional training to prevent similar tragedies.

A Tragic Reminder of the Need for Care and Caution

The Baton Rouge nursing community has reacted with shock and sadness. Many note that such incidents, though rare, highlight the importance of strict adherence to safety procedures and proper use of patient-handling equipment.

As investigations continue, the case stands as a somber reminder that negligence in healthcare can carry devastating consequences — for both patients and providers.
