NMCN Indexing Crisis Resolved: Portal Restored After Fellow Nurses Africa Report

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has restored its indexing portal at https://portal20.nmcn.gov.ng following a Fellow Nurses Africa report exposing its days-long outage. The platform, vital for registering student nurses for the General/Basic Nursing programme, had left thousands stranded as the August 22, 2025, deadline approached.

On July 31, 2025, the NMCN opened the portal for eligible students, including those admitted in October/November 2024, ND-HND students post-second semester ND-1, and 300-level university nursing students, as per a memo by Olaniyi A. Filade, Head of the Indexing Division. However, technical failures halted applications, with the legacy portal (https://portal.nmcn.gov.ng) not listing General Nursing indexing.

Fellow Nurses Africa, the independent voice of African nursing dedicated to educating, informing, and supporting the profession, amplified students’ frustrations. A Lagos student told our correspondent: “We were stranded, unsure if indexing was ongoing.” An Abuja coordinator added: “Only two students registered due to the portal issues. We feared missing the deadline.”

Post-publication, the NMCN restored the portal on August 12, 2025. “The portal’s return is a relief, but stability is key,” the coordinator noted. Efforts to reach Filade for comment were unsuccessful, and no official NMCN statement has been issued.

Students must now act swiftly to apply before the deadline, following these steps:

  1. Access https://portal20.nmcn.gov.ng to create/log in and apply.
  2. Submit documents and obtain school officer clearance.
  3. Pay fees and send candidate details to indexing@nmcn.gov.ng, info@nmcn.gov.ng, and oafilade@nmcn.gov.ng.

For support, contact indexing@nmcn.gov.ng, saweibo@nmcn.gov.ng, or maliyu@nmcn.gov.ng. Fellow Nurses Africa urges vigilance to ensure portal stability.
