Ogun Nursing Students Raise Sexual Misconduct Allegations in Two Incidents at FMC Abeokuta During Clinical Training

FNA NEWS, 1st Of October, 2026

Two nursing students at the Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta, have raised separate allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct during their clinical posting at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.

The allegations were formally documented by the Student Union Government (SUG) of the Ogun State College of Nursing in a report dated September 25, 2026, and submitted to the management of FMC Abeokuta.

The report was addressed to the Medical Director through the hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, Director of Nursing Services and Head of the Education Unit. Copies were also sent to the Provost and Director of the School of Nursing at the Ogun State College of Nursing.

According to the students’ union, the two incidents occurred at the Male Medical Ward on September 23 and 24, 2026, and involved hospital personnel.

The SUG said the affected students brought their individual accounts to the union, prompting the students’ representatives to formally document and escalate the complaints.

What happened during the first incident?

The first complaint was made by Okonkwo Goodness Chinecherem, a student of the Ogun State College of Nursing.

According to the account contained in the SUG’s report, the incident occurred during her night duty on September 24 at the Male Medical Ward.

The student said she was asleep during her break when a male porter identified in the report as Mr Ajayi approached her and allegedly touched her without her consent.

She further alleged that the porter attempted another form of sexual contact involving her genital area.

The student reportedly described the incident as frightening and emotionally distressing, saying it left her feeling unsafe within the clinical environment.

Student reported the matter to the Chief Nurse

According to the report, Okonkwo immediately reported the incident to the Chief Nurse on duty.

When the Sectional Head resumed work the following morning, the Chief Nurse reportedly informed him about the complaint.

A meeting was subsequently held involving the student, the Chief Nurse, the porter and another student who, according to the SUG report, had previously raised concerns about alleged inappropriate conduct involving the same porter.

The parties were reportedly given an opportunity to present their accounts of what happened.

The SUG report states that the porter allegedly accepted responsibility for his actions and pleaded with the student for forgiveness.

The student’s account, however, maintained that the physical contact and alleged attempted sexual contact were without her consent.

The claim that another student had previously raised concerns involving the same porter was presented by the SUG as an issue requiring independent verification as part of any investigation.

Second student reports separate incident

The second complaint involved another nursing student, Aminu Olulabikunmi, who reported an incident she said occurred at the same Male Medical Ward on September 23.

According to her account, she did not have access to a designated bed during her break period.

She said a male worker offered her his bed so she could rest while he slept elsewhere in the ward.

The student alleged that while she was asleep, the worker later returned and lay beside her.

She said the worker covered her body with a cloth before allegedly making an inappropriate sexual advance towards her.

According to the account presented to the SUG, she immediately stopped the alleged conduct and got out of the bed.

The student reportedly told the union that she considered the circumstances inappropriate because she had been asleep and was therefore in a vulnerable position at the time of the alleged incident.

SUG calls for investigation

Following the complaints, the Student Union Government called on FMC Abeokuta management to conduct a formal and impartial investigation into both incidents.

The union requested that the hospital obtain statements from the affected students, relevant staff members and anyone who may have witnessed the incidents, received reports about them or otherwise possessed information that could assist the investigation.

It also asked the hospital to examine relevant evidence, including duty rosters, ward records, security information and other available documentation that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

The students’ representatives also called for measures to protect the affected students from intimidation, retaliation, victimisation or further inappropriate contact while the matter is being investigated.

SUG asks FMC to strengthen student safety measures

Beyond investigating the two complaints, the SUG asked FMC Abeokuta to review arrangements for students undertaking clinical postings at the facility.

Among its requests were improved arrangements for students during night duty and break periods, stronger supervision and access to designated areas where students can rest safely.

The union also called for strict enforcement of professional conduct among personnel who interact with student nurses.

Another specific request was for separate accommodation arrangements for porters and nurses, with the SUG arguing that this would help maintain privacy, safety and appropriate professional boundaries between hospital personnel and student nurses.

The union further requested appropriate support and guidance for the affected students throughout the investigation and called for confidentiality and sensitivity in handling the complaints.

‘We are not seeking to prejudge the outcome’

The SUG stressed that its intervention was not intended to establish guilt before an investigation.

Rather, it said its concern was that the complaints should be properly documented, investigated and addressed, while the safety and dignity of students undergoing clinical training are protected.

Why the allegations matter

Clinical posting is a compulsory and important component of nursing education, and students depend on healthcare facilities for practical experience.

That makes the environment in which they train particularly important.

The allegations reported at FMC Abeokuta raise questions about how students are protected during night duty and break periods, how complaints involving hospital personnel are handled, and what safeguards are available when students report inappropriate conduct.

For the affected students, however, the immediate issue is more specific: what happened, whether the allegations can be established, and what action will follow from the investigation.

A transparent process that gives all parties an opportunity to present evidence will be essential in determining the facts.
