The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities at its School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing following the death of a student nurse, Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji.
In an official notice dated 20 October 2026, the hospital management directed all students in the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sessions to suspend academic activities until further notice.
The directive also covers master’s student nurses and other student nurses undergoing orientation at the institution.
The notice, signed by Dr Taiwo C. Omirin, Coordinator of Programme and Head of School, on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, stated that the decision followed the death of Ayodeji, which reportedly triggered unrest within the hospital community.
Students Ordered to Vacate Hostels
As part of the directive, all students residing in the hospital’s hostels have been ordered to vacate the premises with immediate effect.
Management said the suspension is intended to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The hospital also urged affected students and other stakeholders to remain calm, maintain peace and comply with the directive while awaiting further communication.
Management expressed regret over the inconvenience the decision may cause and appealed for patience, understanding and cooperation from everyone affected.
What Happened to Student Nurse Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji?
Ayodeji’s death has raised concerns among students and members of the nursing community, with calls for transparency and accountability.
Previous media reports said the post-basic nursing student developed breathing difficulties while playing football and was taken to the hospital’s General Medical Practice Unit for treatment.
An eyewitness account published by several news outlets alleged that oxygen equipment placed on the student was not switched on.
Is the Suspension Really About Creating a Peaceful Environment?

The management of the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, said the indefinite suspension of academic activities was necessary to create a peaceful and conducive environment for investigating the death of student nurse Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji.
However, the decision raises important questions about how the suspension and immediate hostel evacuation will contribute to that objective.
While maintaining peace during an investigation is important, an indefinite suspension of academic activities affects students beyond those directly involved in the incident.
The directive also requires students living in the hostels to vacate immediately, potentially leaving them to make urgent alternative accommodation arrangements.
The central question is whether suspending academic activities and ordering students out of their hostels is the most appropriate way to restore calm while ensuring that concerns surrounding the student’s death are properly addressed.
If tensions have arisen because students are demanding answers or accountability, management must also consider whether its response will build confidence in the investigation or deepen existing concerns.
An effective response to a student’s death should prioritise a transparent investigation, clear communication and appropriate engagement with affected students.
It should also protect students’ right to raise concerns peacefully while maintaining safety across the institution.
Key questions remain unanswered: What specific security concerns made an indefinite suspension necessary?
Why was immediate hostel evacuation considered essential?
What arrangements have been made for students who must leave the premises?
Has management consulted student representatives, and what conditions must be met before academic activities resume?
Creating a peaceful environment should not come at the expense of transparency. As the investigation proceeds, management should communicate its findings and decisions clearly, provide reasonable guidance to affected students and explain the conditions for resuming academic activities.
Calls for Transparency and Accountability
The investigation is expected to help establish the facts surrounding Ayodeji’s death and clarify any issues identified in the care he received.
For nursing students and healthcare professionals, the incident also highlights the importance of effective emergency response systems, patient safety and transparent institutional investigations.
While the circumstances of the death must be established through a fair and evidence-based process, the concerns raised by the incident underline the need for clear communication with students and the nursing community.
The hospital has not stated when academic activities will resume.
Students and other affected stakeholders are expected to await further official communication from management.
Fellow Nurses Africa will continue to follow developments in the investigation and any further announcements concerning the suspension of academic activities at the School of Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing, Aro, Abeokuta.
