Renewed Hope for Overseas-Trained Nurses: US EB-3 Priority Dates Advance by 8 Months
Fellow Nurses Africa News 17th, March 2026
The U.S. Department of State has published the Visa Bulletin for April 2026, confirming substantial forward movement in the Employment-Based Third Preference (EB-3) category. This update provides renewed optimism for overseas-trained registered nurses and other skilled healthcare professionals pursuing U.S. permanent residency, particularly via the Schedule A pathway for shortage occupations.

For applicants in All Chargeability Areas Except Those Listed the default category covering the United Kingdom and most countries worldwide (excluding only China-mainland born, India, Mexico and the Philippines due to per-country limits) the Final Action Date for EB-3 (Skilled Workers and Professionals) has advanced to 1 June 2024. This represents an approximate 8-month progression from the March 2026 bulletin, where the date was 1 October 2023.
The progress is attributed to effective utilisation of the annual visa allocation, including potential rollover of unused numbers from family-sponsored preferences and controlled demand in non-backlogged regions.
What This Means for Overseas-Trained Nurses
- Priority dates before 1 June 2024 are now current for final action, enabling eligible applicants to advance to immigrant visa issuance (consular processing) or adjustment of status approval (if in the US).
- The Dates for Filing chart indicates C (Current) for EB-3 in this group. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has confirmed that employment-based applicants may use the Dates for Filing chart for April 2026 adjustment of status filings (Form I-485), allowing many qualified nurses to submit promptly.
- This development is timely given ongoing U.S. healthcare workforce shortages, where internationally trained nurses remain in high demand.
EB-3 Final Action Dates – April 2026 Overview
| Chargeability Area | Final Action Date |
|---|---|
| All Chargeability Areas (including UK) | 01JUN24 |
| China-mainland born | 15JUN21 |
| India | 15NOV13 |
| Mexico | 01JUN24 |
| Philippines | 01AUG23 |
Retrogression Risk
The bulletin includes a standard reminder that dates could retrogress later in fiscal year 2026 if demand increases significantly. However, current trends indicate stable availability for applicants from non-backlogged countries.
Speaking on the development, Simiyu Paul RN, Managing Director and CEO of KenyanNurse Consultants Ltd — a consultancy specialising in supporting African and overseas nurses with pathways to international opportunities including USRN certification — welcomed the update. He advised that this is the best time for those seeking the opportunity to work as a nurse in the UK (and by extension, similar stable immigration routes) to be more serious about their preparation and applications.
Next Steps for Affected Nurses
- Verify your priority date (based on country of birth) against the 1 June 2024 cutoff.
- If eligible, gather required documents and proceed with adjustment of status or consular processing.
- Consult a qualified immigration attorney or accredited representative for personalised guidance on Schedule A certification, employer sponsorship and processing timelines.
