TINUBU’S HEALTH UPDATES: Fresh details emerge as Nigeria’s President Tinubu stumbles during Türkiye welcome ceremony
Ankara, 27 January 2026 – Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 73, briefly stumbled and fell during an official welcome ceremony at the Presidential Complex in Ankara on Tuesday, immediately sparking public speculation about his health amid his state visit to Türkiye.
Video footage from the event shared by official Turkish sources and widely circulated on social media shows President Tinubu walking alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after inspecting a guard of honour. While adjusting his position on the parade ground surface (appearing to involve a red carpet or similar flooring), he loses balance, stumbles, and falls briefly. Security personnel assist him almost instantly, and he regains his footing within seconds, proceeding with the ceremony and bilateral engagements without any apparent ongoing difficulty or interruption.
The Nigerian Presidency responded rapidly to address concerns, particularly in light of the president’s age and previous reported incidents (including a mild misstep during Nigeria’s Democracy Day in Abuja in June 2024 and an earlier stumble in Kaduna in 2021). Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga attributed the incident to President Tinubu stepping on a metal object on the floor, causing a momentary loss of balance.
“The president stepped on a metal on the floor, which made him to lose his balance. This is not a big deal, except for those who want to make mischief out of the fleeting incident. It was a mere stumble, thank God, not a fall.>”
Mr Onanuga stated, emphasising that the episode was minor and inconsequential.
He explicitly dismissed any health-related implications, describing the president as remaining “hale and hearty” and fully active in his schedule.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, reinforced this message on X (formerly Twitter) in a post headlined in all capital letters: “PRESIDENT TINUBU IN GREAT SHAPE AS STATE VISIT PROCEEDS SMOOTHLY.” Mr Dare noted that, following the welcome ceremony, President Tinubu immediately moved to scheduled bilateral meetings with President Erdoğan and senior officials from both nations.
Some reports have alternatively referenced a poorly laid carpet as a possible factor, though the official Nigerian account consistently cites the metal object. No medical concerns have been raised by the Nigerian delegation, Turkish hosts, or independent observers, and the visit’s programme including discussions on trade, defence cooperation (notably Nigerian acquisitions of Turkish drones and helicopters), energy, investment, and regional security continued uninterrupted.
Several memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed, highlighting the strategic importance of deepening Nigeria-Türkiye relations.
This marks the latest in a small number of public stumbles for President Tinubu during official events, each previously explained as minor environmental factors (e.g., uneven surfaces or missteps) rather than indicators of underlying health issues. Such occurrences can happen to anyone in ceremonial settings, particularly with formal footwear and structured movements, and do not inherently suggest medical problems.
The state visit reciprocal to President Erdoğan’s 2021 trip to Nigeriafocuses on expanding bilateral ties, with Türkiye positioning itself as a growing partner in sub-Saharan Africa. President Tinubu’s delegation includes senior officials such as Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Defence Minister Christopher Musa, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. He is scheduled to conclude the visit and return to Nigeria in the coming days.
The Presidency has urged focus on the visit’s diplomatic outcomes rather than isolated moments, while public reactions on social media range from concern and calls for unity to partisan commentary.
