The Niger State cholera outbreak has claimed 16 lives with 150 confirmed cases, according to UNICEF officials who met with traditional leaders on August 11, 2025, to discuss containment strategies.

The Niger State cholera outbreak death toll has risen to 16, with 150 people testing positive for the waterborne disease since the outbreak began in 2025. UNICEF health officials confirmed these figures during an August 11 meeting with the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Farouq Bahago.

Of the 451 people isolated during the Niger State health emergency, 150 tested positive through rapid diagnostic tests. All confirmed cholera patients have received treatment and been discharged from medical facilities.

The cholera outbreak in Niger State initially recorded 13 deaths but has since escalated to 16 fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for improved water and sanitation infrastructure in northern Nigeria.

UNICEF Niger State Response to Cholera Crisis

“UNICEF continues to work closely with the Niger State government to contain this cholera outbreak and prevent further transmission,” the organization stated through Dr. Ahmed Tsofo, representing UNICEF’s Kaduna Field Office.

Niger State Public Health Challenges Beyond Cholera

The high-level meeting at the Emir’s palace addressed multiple health concerns affecting Niger State residents, including polio eradication efforts, measles prevention, and critically low exclusive breastfeeding rates.

UNICEF officials secured support from Emir Alhaji Farouq Bahago for upcoming polio vaccination campaigns and the scheduled October 2025 measles and rubella vaccine rollout in Niger State.

Traditional Leadership Support for Health Interventions

“We will continue to talk and work in the interest of our people,” Emir Bahago pledged during the August 11 meeting. “We will support your efforts and complement your activities in all four areas of intervention.”

The Niger State cholera outbreak underscores persistent water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure gaps that make northern Nigerian states vulnerable to waterborne diseases, particularly during rainy seasons.

Health experts emphasize that cholera prevention requires sustained investment in clean water access and improved sanitation systems across Niger State communities, as the disease remains entirely preventable through proper WASH infrastructure.
