Tragedy: Aspiring Nurse Killed in Armed Attack En Route to Nursing College Interview

In a devastating blow to Africa’s nursing community, Peggy Ayelbassah, a promising young woman from Ghana’s Afigya Kwabre North District, was tragically killed in an armed attack on Thursday night, July 24, 2025. The incident occurred while Peggy was traveling to Salaga for a nursing college admission interview, a journey that symbolized her dream of becoming a nurse. This heartbreaking event, which claimed two lives and left three others injured, has sparked outrage and grief across Ghana and beyond.

The attack took place in Denase, where unknown gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying Peggy and other passengers. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, plunging the community into chaos and fear. According to Kwabena Asamoah, the Unit Committee Chairman of the Denase Electoral Area, the assault did not appear to be a typical robbery. “The way the shooting was done, it looked like they knew who they were after,” Asamoah said, raising concerns that the attack may have been targeted.

Peggy’s death has left her family, friends, and the Afigya Kwabre North community in mourning. Collins Adomako-Mensah, the Member of Parliament for the area, shared the tragic news on Facebook, revealing that Peggy had contacted him just a day before her death. “A very sad day,” he wrote, lamenting the loss of a young woman with immense potential. The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators, while the three survivors are receiving treatment at Offinso Saint Patrick Hospital.

This tragedy underscores the safety challenges faced by aspiring healthcare professionals across Africa, particularly in regions plagued by violence. Peggy’s story resonates deeply within the nursing community, serving as a stark reminder of the risks young people endure in pursuit of their dreams to serve others. Her untimely death highlights the urgent need for African governments, nursing organizations, and civil society to prioritize the safety of students and healthcare workers.

Fellow Nurses Africa joins the broader healthcare community in mourning Peggy Ayelbassah, whose aspiration to become a nurse was cut short before it could fully bloom. Her loss is a call to action to ensure safer roads, institutions, and communities for those dedicated to saving lives. As investigations continue, we honor Peggy’s memory and her commitment to the noble profession of nursing.

May her soul rest in peace.
