NANNM vs. Aro Management: Battle Over Student Nurse Suspension

Abeokuta, Nigeria – The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro chapter, has issued a scathing rebuke of the hospital management’s handling of the suspension of post-basic nursing student Ogunjobi Oluwaseyi Samuel, alleging an unfair suspension following an assault by Dr. Oluyinka Majekodunmi on June 30, 2025. In a strongly worded resolution dated July 20, 2025, NANNM demands the immediate reversal of the suspension, accusing Provost and Medical Director Dr. Paul Agboola P.A. of abuse of authority and procedural irregularities.

The controversy erupted after Ogunjobi reported being verbally and physically assaulted by Dr. Majekodunmi during a ward round, including being struck with a chair and subjected to derogatory language like “bastard” and “stupid.” Despite Dr. Majekodunmi’s admission of verbal abuse during a flawed investigative panel chaired by Dr. Agboola, the student was suspended without a completed report, while the doctor received only a warning letter. NANNM highlights the panel’s lack of due process, with Dr. Agboola allegedly stifling deliberation and issuing contradictory public statements, including claims in Punch and Amebo Newspaper NG that no physical assault occurred despite witness testimonies.

NANNM’s resolution condemns the suspension as an act of systemic intimidation, noting its severe impact on Ogunjobi’s mental health and reputation, nearly driving him to suicide. The union challenges Dr. Agboola’s assertion that the suspension is a “corrective measure” for one or two days, pointing to the indefinite nature of the July 17, 2025, suspension letter ordering immediate vacation of the premises. The union also cites a pattern of Dr. Majekodunmi’s misconduct and Dr. Agboola’s divisive tactics, including past retaliatory panels against union officials.

As protests continue, early morning reports on July 21, 2025, indicate a heavy presence of security and civil defence officers at the hospital to curb further demonstrations, where nurses have been singing protest songs and holding banners demanding “Justice for Oluwaseyi” and “End Nurse Abuse.” The Chief Medical Director (CMD), speaking to journalists on Saturday, July 19, 2025, confirmed a meeting with NANNM scheduled for today, Monday, July 21, 2025. While we await the outcome of this critical meeting, we strongly urge all parties to prioritize justice and transparency in resolving this nurse assault investigation.
