Aro Nursing Crisis Resolved: Ogunjobi’s Reinstatement Marks Victory for Nurses
Abeokuta, Nigeria – A significant resolution has been achieved in the Aro nursing crisis at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, with the reinstatement of post-basic nursing student Ogunjobi Oluwaseyi Samuel, effective immediately. The directive, issued on July 22, 2025, by Provost and Medical Director Dr. Paul Agboola P.A., underscores a triumph for nurse safety advocacy, propelled by Fellow Nurses Africa’s relentless efforts and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) pressure.
The crisis originated from an alleged assault by Dr. Oluyinka Majekodunmi on June 30, 2025, where Ogunjobi was reportedly struck with a chair and subjected to insults like “bastard” and “stupid” during a ward round. Despite Dr. Majekodunmi’s admission of verbal abuse during a flawed investigative panel, Ogunjobi’s suspension on July 17, 2025, triggered widespread outrage. NANNM’s July 20, 2025, resolution demanded the suspension’s reversal within 24 hours, citing Dr. Agboola’s bias and procedural irregularities, with contradictory claims reported in Punch and Amebo Newspaper NG. The suspension severely impacted Ogunjobi’s mental health, nearly leading to suicide.
The reinstatement, detailed in memo Ref. No. NPHA/039/VOL.II/ dated July 22, 2025, and signed by Dr. (Mrs) T.C. Omirin, follows a July 21, 2025, meeting with NANNM, confirmed by the Chief Medical Director amid heavy security to manage protests featuring nurses singing songs and holding banners for “Justice for Oluwaseyi” and “End Nurse Abuse.” Fellow Nurses Africa’s comprehensive report, published at https://www.fellownurses.com/2025/07/comprehensive-report-alleged-assault-on-student-nurse-leading-to-suspension-at-neuropsychiatric-hospital-abeokuta.html, amplified the issue, catching stakeholders’ attention and driving this victory.
