ICN Congress 2025 in Focus: A Visual Recap from Helsinki

Fellow Nurses Africa News ||Helsinki, Finland, June 9-13, 2025.

Picture this: over 7,000 nurses from more than 140 countries flooding the Messukeskus Helsinki, Expo and Convention Centre, united under the bold theme “Nursing Power to Change the World”. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) 30th Congress was a whirlwind of inspiration, innovation, and global connection. Fellow Nurses Africa is here to take you through the highlights with a visual recap that celebrates nursing excellence—especially from an African perspective.

A Grand Opening: Nurses Paint Helsinki Bright

The Congress kicked off with a bang! Nurses paraded through Helsinki’s streets, turning the city into a canvas of vibrant colors and cultures. African delegates rocked bold prints alongside Nordic peers in sleek designs, showcasing nursing’s rich diversity. The opening ceremony, hosted by ICN President Dr. Pamela Cipriano and CEO Howard Catton, hit an emotional high with a tribute to nurses lost to wars, disasters, and climate crises—a reminder of our collective strength and sacrifice.

The parade brought Helsinki to life with nursing pride!

The Helsinki Communiqué: A New Era for Nursing

One of the week’s biggest moments? The launch of the Helsinki Communiqué. This game-changer redefined nursing and nurse, reflecting our evolving role in a complex world. Backed by the ICN Council of National Nursing Associations (CNR), it’s a wake-up call for African nurses to lead healthcare transformation back home.

A historic moment as nurses embrace a bold new vision.

Big Voices, Bigger Ideas: Leadership Unleashed

The plenary sessions were pure fire. Dr. Pamela Cipriano fired up the crowd with insights on leadership, while former New Zealand PM Helen Clark dropped a truth bomb: “If nurses had been at the table early on, the pandemic might’ve played out differently.” African nurses nodded in agreement—we’re ready to shape policy! Meanwhile, Nordic sessions dazzled with Finland’s health tech innovations, sparking ideas for tackling challenges in Africa.

A call to action that echoed across continents.

Africa Rising: Equity and Advocacy in the Spotlight

African nurses owned the stage, joining global leaders like Ukraine’s Chief Nursing Officer Kateryna Komar to tackle healthcare equity, racism, and colonial legacies. Their voices roared with determination: it’s time for resources and partnerships to power up nursing in Africa.

Sparks of Genius: Hackathons and Leadership Hubs

Creativity was everywhere! The NurseHack4Health Hackathon saw nurses brainstorming solutions to real-world problems, while the Nurse Policy Entrepreneur Café brewed fresh policy ideas. The new ICN Leadership Centre—merging the Global Nursing Leadership Institute (GNLI) and Bank of Nursing Experts (BNE)—is set to supercharge African nurses for change.

Innovation in action—nurses solving problems together.

One World, One Mission: Nursing Unity

From the Nurses for Peace campaign to talks on advanced practice in crises, the Congress showcased nursing’s grit and heart. A tweet summed it up: “#ICN2025 is electric—7,000 nurses leading the charge for global change!” For African nurses, it was a rallying cry to innovate and advocate louder than ever.

A global family united by purpose and passion.
