Ogbomoso, Nigeria – March 18, 2025

The academic and nursing communities came together in a remarkable event at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, to celebrate the retirement of Professor (Nurse) Bayo Lawal Ajibade, a leading figure in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing.

The event, which featured a valedictory lecture, was a fitting tribute to a man whose lifelong dedication to mental health and nursing education has left an indelible mark on the profession.

With the theme “IMPACTING LIVES: The Mental Health Psychosocial Pathway of an Academic and Professional Iroko,” the valedictory lecture highlighted Professor Ajibade’s vast contributions to the nursing profession, particularly in psychiatric nursing.

The guest lecturer, Prof. Emmanuel Ejembi Anyebe, a distinguished academic, explored the psychosocial journey of mental health professionals in academia, underscoring the challenges, triumphs, and societal impact of mental health nursing.

The event attracted prominent figures in nursing and academia, including Prof. R.O. Rom Kalilu – Vice-Chancellor of LAUTECH (Chairman of the event), Prof. A.S. Adeyemi – Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof. F.O. Adeyemo – Dean, Faculty of Nursing amongst many others.

They were joined by families, students, colleagues, and nursing professionals who came to honor a man widely regarded as a pillar of psychiatric nursing in Nigeria.

Professor Ajibade’s career spans decades of mentorship, research, and advocacy for mental health awareness in Nigeria. Many of his students and colleagues described him as a visionary leader whose impact will continue to shape the profession for years to come.

While he may be retiring from active service, his legacy in mental health nursing and academic leadership will remain a guiding force for future generations.

As he transitions into retirement, many in the profession believe his expertise and leadership will continue to influence mental health policies and education in Nigeria.

Congratulations to professor Nurse Bayo Lawal Ajibade!
