In a shocking turn of events, an auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, is set to face trial for her alleged role in the tragic and controversial death of Nigerian singer Mohbad (Aloba Oladimeji IleriOluwa). The Magistrate Court in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos, has cleared music stars Naira Marley, Sam Larry, Primeboy, and Mohbad’s manager of any wrongdoing, shifting the focus onto the nurse and the alarming dangers of unqualified medical practice.

According to legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) Lagos, Ogedengbe, alongside Mohbad’s friend, Ayobami Sadiq, will be prosecuted for reckless and negligent acts under Section 251 (e) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, which holds individuals accountable for actions that endanger lives.

The tragic case of Mohbad’s untimely death shines a harsh light on the rampant issue of quackery in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Across the country, unqualified individuals posing as nurses and medical professionals continue to endanger lives, erode trust in the healthcare system, and contribute to preventable deaths.

Quackery in nursing is a time bomb from botched treatments to dangerous drug administration, patients unknowingly put their lives in the hands of unlicensed practitioners. The result? Irreversible damage, suffering, and loss.

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has repeatedly warned against the increasing infiltration of unqualified persons into the profession. Yet, weak regulations, lack of enforcement, and public misinformation continue to fuel this crisis.

The death of the young and promising singer on September 12, 2023, initially sparked outrage, leading to the arrest of Naira Marley and Sam Larry, who were accused of bullying him before his passing. However, as the legal dust settles, the real danger appears to have come from within the healthcare system an unqualified nurse administering treatment.

This case must serve as a turning point. How many more lives will be lost before the government takes decisive action? How many more families will grieve because of medical negligence and unregulated healthcare practices?

The trial of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe is more than just a legal case—it is a test of Nigeria’s commitment to eradicating quackery and protecting innocent lives.
