Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has donated ₦10 million to Mother of Mercy College of Nursing Sciences, Mbutu-Okohia, Ngor-Okpala LGA.

The donation came during a return visit to the college, weeks after he capped its pioneer nursing graduates.

Obi told the students that global forecasts predict a major shortage of healthcare workers by 2030.

He described nursing as one of the most important professions for the future.

He urged the students to see themselves as global citizens who can succeed anywhere while staying connected to Nigeria.

He encouraged them to adopt what he called the “Indian spirit” – excelling worldwide but always remembering their roots.

Obi said his support for the college comes from his commitment to empowering young Nigerians.

He added that money has real meaning only when used to help others.

He praised the college management for achieving full accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and starting its Basic Nursing Programme with qualified staff.

Obi also commended the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Congregation for its work in education and healthcare.

He said faith-based institutions play a key role in building Nigeria’s social and moral strength.

He reminded the students to practise with discipline, compassion and integrity.

He called nurses the backbone of any good healthcare system.
