Caregiver Turns Victim: African Health Worker Killed by Patient in the UK

Fellow Nurses Africa News ||Lagos Nigeria || 27 June 2025.

The African community in the UK are in mourning following the tragic death of Irene Wanjiru Mbugua, a 48-year-old caregiver from Mataara, Gatundu North. Ms. Mbugua, a dedicated single mother of four, lost her life on June 22, 2025, while on duty in the UK.

The incident, currently under investigation by West Midlands Police, involved a male patient she was caring for who turned against her. Ms. Mbugua had been living in the UK for two years after relocating from her country home in Kenya, working diligently with a caregiving agency. Her sudden death has left her family and fellow caregivers in shock, with the news reaching them a day later after frantic but unsuccessful attempts by the agency to contact her. She failed to file her mandatory daily work report, raising initial concerns.

Irene was known for her kindness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her caregiving duties. As a hardworking caregiver, she touched the lives of many patients and colleagues. She was the beloved sister of Baba Mbugua (formerly of Coventry) and a cherished member of the Mbugua family. Her loss is deeply felt within the African caregiving community and beyond.

Fellow Nurses Africa urges the caregiving community to rally around the Mbugua family during this difficult time. The family has shared the following contact details for support and condolences: Baba Mbugua (Gibert Mbugua) at 0745 171319, George Mbugua at 0727 297219, and Evalyne Mbugua at 0712 061630. The caregiving community is encouraged to reach out, offer prayers, and provide support to help the family cope with this devastating loss.

The circumstances surrounding Ms. Mbugua’s death remain under investigation by West Midlands Police as of 10:48 AM BST on Friday, June 27, 2025. This tragic incident raises critical questions about the safety of caregivers, particularly those working with vulnerable patients. Fellow Nurses Africa calls for increased awareness and protective measures to ensure the well-being of healthcare workers worldwide.

As the community mourns, Irene’s legacy as a dedicated caregiver and loving mother will live on. Her sacrifice highlights the risks caregivers face daily and the need for better support systems. We extend our deepest sympathies to her four children, family, and friends. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
