LAUTECH Nursing Student Wins ₦500,000 at NDDCCN Medication Safety Grand Finale

A nursing student from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has won ₦500,000 after emerging victorious in the drug calculation competition at a major national medication safety event in Ibadan.

Ahmed Abdulazeez Okikiola claimed the top prize at the NDDCCN 2026 Bootcamp Grand Finale, organised by the Foundation for Medication Safety. The event, held on Saturday 3 October 2026 under the theme “Medication Without Harm,” brought together nurses, nursing students and healthcare professionals committed to strengthening safe medication practices across Nigeria.

Speaking to FNA News shortly after the announcement, Okikiola expressed deep gratitude and reflected on the broader significance of the competition.

“This award is not just about me. It is a reminder that accuracy in medication calculation can mean the difference between life and harm,” he said. “I am thankful to the Foundation for Medication Safety for creating this platform, and I dedicate this win to every nursing student striving for excellence and to the patients whose safety depends on our competence.”

Competition draws strong field

Forty-nine contestants entered the drug calculation challenge. After successive rounds, 36 advanced and six reached the final:

  • Abdulaleem Kabirat Itunu
  • Areghan Faith Ossetin
  • Ahmed Abdulazeez Okikiola
  • Umezulike Chimtua Cynthia
  • Bamire Azeez Dare
  • Gbolasere Muthmoinna Ololade

Okikiola emerged winner. Abdulaleem Kabirat Itunu finished as first runner-up, while Umezulike Chimtua Cynthia took second place. Organisers noted that the competition rigorously tested speed, precision and clinical judgement — core skills required to prevent avoidable medication errors.

Research award highlights antibiotic stewardship

In the abstract presentation category, Olalere Oyinkansola Elizabeth won with her study titled: “Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of the WHO AWaRe Classification of Antibiotics Among Nurses in Selected Primary Health Care Centres in Ibadan North, Oyo State.”

Her research examined nurses’ understanding and application of the World Health Organization’s AWaRe framework, which categorises antibiotics into Access, Watch and Reserve groups to promote responsible use and curb antimicrobial resistance.

Expert voices stress vigilance and character

Keynote speaker Mrs Mronke Oluyemisi Awodiya, a registered nurse, midwife and educator with 35 years of distinguished service at University College Hospital, Ibadan, urged nurses to practise assertiveness and sharp observation.

She clarified the critical distinction between Anti-Tetanus Serum (ATS), which provides immediate but temporary passive immunity, and Tetanus Toxoid (TT), a vaccine that stimulates the body to develop longer-lasting active immunity. The two preparations, she emphasised, are not interchangeable.

Mrs Awodiya also cautioned against the risks posed by Look-Alike, Sound-Alike (LASA) medicines and reaffirmed the enduring importance of the 10 Rights of Medication Administration. “Good intentions alone do not guarantee patient safety,” she noted. Continuous learning, professional confidence and the courage to speak up remain indispensable.

Leadership speaker Mr Olatunji Oluwafisayo focused on durable professional success. He outlined the “4 Cs of Moral Excellence” — Character, Competence, Contribution and Contentment — stressing that patients need nurses who are trustworthy and compassionate, not merely those who project success.

Why medication safety matters

Medication-related harm continues to pose a serious challenge in healthcare systems worldwide. Precise dose calculations, clear understanding of medicines, and a culture that encourages staff to raise concerns are essential safeguards.

By recognising both clinical excellence and research contribution, the NDDCCN 2026 Grand Finale underscored that safe practice rests on technical skill, professional character and evidence-based thinking. The Foundation for Medication Safety continues to champion these standards across Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
