BREAKING: Federal Government Inaugurates 21 Members of the NMCN Board in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria — June 18, 2026

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially inaugurated the 21-member Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), ushering in a new phase of leadership for the country’s nursing and midwifery regulatory body.

The inauguration ceremony took place in Abuja and was conducted under the authority of the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare. The newly constituted Board is expected to provide strategic oversight for nursing and midwifery education, professional regulation, workforce development, and healthcare standards across Nigeria.

The Board is chaired by Dr. (Mrs.) Alice Ogundele, a respected nursing leader with extensive experience in healthcare administration and professional regulation.

Other notable members of the Board include Dr. (Mrs.) Serifat Omobolanle Aminu, Prof. Saleh Garba Ngaski, Dr. (Mrs.) Jenny Akpan, Dr. Esther Ahmed, Dr. Safiyya F. Usman, Mrs. Umah Imaobong, and Comrade Haruna Mamman, alongside other distinguished representatives from academia, professional associations, healthcare institutions, and government agencies.

A Critical Moment for Nigerian Nursing

The inauguration comes at a time when Nigeria’s nursing profession is facing both opportunities and challenges.

The country continues to experience increasing demand for nurses locally and internationally, while healthcare stakeholders have repeatedly called for stronger investment in nursing education, workforce retention, professional development, and regulatory reforms.

As the statutory body responsible for regulating nursing and midwifery practice in Nigeria, the NMCN plays a central role in maintaining professional standards, accrediting training institutions, licensing practitioners, and protecting public safety through effective regulation.

Healthcare experts believe the decisions taken by the newly inaugurated Board could significantly influence the future direction of nursing and midwifery practice in the country.

Key Responsibilities of the New Board

The newly inaugurated Board is expected to focus on several strategic priorities, including:

  • Strengthening nursing and midwifery regulation across Nigeria
  • Enhancing standards for nursing education and training
  • Supporting workforce planning and retention initiatives
  • Improving continuing professional development programmes
  • Advancing digital transformation within regulatory processes
  • Promoting ethical and professional standards in practice
  • Strengthening collaboration with national and international healthcare stakeholders

The Board is also expected to hold a post-inaugural meeting to discuss its strategic agenda and priorities for the coming years.

Why This Matters

The inauguration of the new NMCN Board is more than an administrative exercise. The Board’s policies and decisions will directly affect thousands of nurses, midwives, nursing students, educators, healthcare institutions, and patients across Nigeria.

At a time when the healthcare sector is under increasing pressure to strengthen workforce capacity and improve service delivery, stakeholders will be closely watching the Board’s actions and policy direction.

The nursing profession remains the backbone of healthcare delivery in Nigeria, making effective leadership at the regulatory level essential for the future of the country’s health system.

Fellow Nurses Africa News will continue to monitor developments from the newly inaugurated Board and provide timely updates on policies, reforms, and decisions that impact nursing and midwifery practice in Nigeria and across Africa.
