A young Nigerian doctor has died after reportedly suffering complications from injuries sustained during a violent assault earlier this year, sparking renewed concerns about the safety of healthcare workers in Nigeria.
Dr. Ogbomade Samson Romani, a House Officer at Central Hospital Warri in Warri, Delta State, died in the early hours of 17 April 2026, according to members of Nigeria’s medical community.

Dr. Romani was a graduate of Niger Delta University and was described by colleagues as hardworking, humble and deeply committed to his profession.
Assault earlier this year
The incident linked to his death reportedly began in February 2026, when Dr. Romani was allegedly brutally assaulted for nearly 20 minutes by individuals said to have been arranged by relatives of a patient.
The attack reportedly occurred at or near the hospital gate. Medical sources say he sustained serious injuries to his face and abdomen during the assault.
Despite the severity of the incident, no arrests have been publicly confirmed.
Colleagues say Dr. Romani continued working afterward but had been struggling with ongoing health complications related to the injuries.
Collapse during hospital meeting
Earlier this week, around 14 April, Dr. Romani reportedly felt unwell during a hospital meeting discussing a separate violent incident involving doctors.
The meeting followed an assault on 11 April, when a Senior Registrar in Paediatrics and another House Officer were attacked after informing a father of the death of his newborn in the Special Care Baby Unit.
The case prompted the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors to support a 48-hour warning strike by doctors at Central Hospital Warri over safety concerns.
Dr. Romani excused himself from the meeting to rest but collapsed on the way to his hostel. He was admitted to the intensive care unit but did not recover.
Calls for investigation
The death has triggered calls for investigation from medical professionals and advocates.
Nigerian doctor and health advocate Chinonso Egemba urged the Nigerian Medical Association and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault and the doctor’s death.
The case has reignited debate within Nigeria’s medical community about violence against healthcare workers, hospital security, and accountability for attacks on doctors.
