Inside the NCLEX Result Cancellation Crackdown: Test-Takers Have Results Cancelled as Exam Integrity Concerns Grow
Multiple NCLEX-RN candidates across several countries have been told their exam results cannot be validated after regulators flagged unusual testing patterns. The development has triggered concern within the global nursing community and raised questions about exam integrity, fairness, and transparency.
24 April 2026
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has cancelled the results of a number of candidates who recently sat the NCLEX-RN, the licensing examination required for registered nurses seeking to practise in the United States and Canada.
Official letters sent to affected candidates state that their results “cannot be validated” after exam monitoring systems identified irregular testing patterns, including what regulators describe as “unusual score increases.”
Candidates whose results have been cancelled have been offered a one-time free retake, provided the exam is completed before 30 June 2026.
The situation has sparked discussion among nurses internationally, particularly among internationally educated nurses preparing for professional practice abroad.
Why Results May Be Cancelled
The NCLEX is designed to measure whether a candidate has the knowledge and clinical judgement required to practise safely as a nurse.
According to official examination policies, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing may cancel results if exam data raises concerns that the score may not accurately reflect a candidate’s true performance.

Situations that may trigger a review include:
- unusual testing behaviour
- irregular answer patterns
- statistical anomalies in performance data
- significant and unexpected score changes between attempts
The NCLEX uses computer-adaptive testing, a system that adjusts the difficulty of questions based on a candidate’s responses. This approach generates detailed performance data during the exam.
Psychometric analysis of this data helps regulators determine whether exam results appear consistent with expected testing patterns.
If the data indicates that a score cannot be confidently validated, the result may be cancelled and the candidate asked to retake the exam.
Candidates in Multiple Countries Affected
Reports within nursing networks suggest that affected candidates sat the exam at testing centres in several locations, including:
- Kenya
- South Africa
- the United States
The NCLEX is administered globally through authorised testing centres, allowing internationally educated nurses to complete the exam outside North America.
For many candidates, preparing for the exam involves months of study, costly preparation courses, and significant financial investment.

The cancellation of results, even when a free retake is offered, can therefore create considerable uncertainty for those planning to begin nursing careers abroad.
At the time of publication, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing has not released official figures on how many candidates may have been affected.
Allegations Circulating Within Nursing Communities
At the same time, discussions within online nursing forums and professional networks have raised concerns about alleged attempts to exploit candidates preparing for the exam.
According to unconfirmed sources within nursing communities, some individuals have allegedly offered services claiming they could guarantee success in the NCLEX examination.
In these discussions, candidates were reportedly asked to pay several thousand dollars — in some cases allegedly up to $5,000 — for so-called “guaranteed pass” arrangements.
Under the alleged arrangements described online, candidates would:
- pay an initial deposit
- sit the exam normally
- pay the remaining balance after receiving a passing result
However, no official investigation has publicly confirmed the existence of such schemes, and regulators have not announced verified cases involving paid NCLEX pass services.
Some online discussions have referenced testing locations in California, although no regulatory authority has confirmed wrongdoing at any specific testing centre.
Risks of Exam Scams
Experts in professional licensure testing warn that offers promising guaranteed success on high-stakes examinations are often scams targeting anxious candidates.
The NCLEX is conducted under strict security protocols that include:
- biometric identity verification
- palm-vein scanning
- video monitoring throughout the exam
- controlled testing environments
- strict behavioural monitoring
These safeguards are designed to protect the integrity of the exam and make direct manipulation of results extremely difficult.

Professional organisations therefore emphasise that there is no legitimate method to guarantee passing the NCLEX.
A Delicate Balance: Integrity and Fairness
The situation highlights a broader challenge faced by regulators responsible for professional licensure examinations.
Protecting the integrity of the NCLEX is essential because the exam serves as the primary gateway to nursing practice in North America.
At the same time, cancelling results where no individual misconduct has been proven can create distress for candidates who believe they achieved genuine academic improvement.
Modern testing systems rely heavily on statistical analysis and psychometric modelling, which can sometimes identify irregular patterns without establishing the cause.
Some members of the nursing community have therefore called for greater transparency about how exam anomalies are investigated and how candidates can seek clarification.
What Affected Candidates Should Do
Candidates who recently completed the NCLEX are advised to:
Check their email carefully, including spam folders, for any official communication from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
If their results have been cancelled, they should schedule the free retake as soon as possible to ensure the exam is completed before the 30 June 2026 deadline.
Candidates may also wish to contact the NCSBN directly for clarification and inform the nursing regulatory body with which they applied for licensure.
Above all, candidates are advised to rely only on legitimate preparation resources and accredited training programmes.
A Developing Story
For many internationally educated nurses including those across Africa, the NCLEX-RN represents the final step toward practising abroad.
As exam integrity questions continue to circulate within the profession, nurses, educators, and regulators will be watching closely for further clarification from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
