Nurse narrowly escapes strangulation at California hospital nurses’ station
A nurse at Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital in California has survived an alleged strangulation attack while working at the nurses’ station, in an incident that has renewed calls for stronger protections against workplace violence in healthcare.
The attack occurred on 10 March 2026, according to a police report obtained by nursing news outlet Nurse.org. The victim was seated at a computer when 30-year-old Jonathon Salvador Calderon allegedly approached from behind and used a medical cord to strangle them. Witnesses reported that the suspect uttered threatening words during the assault.

Multiple staff members and bystanders intervened swiftly, restraining Calderon and freeing the nurse before serious harm could occur. The nurse received medical attention but survived the incident.
Calderon was arrested by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and is being held without bail. He faces felony charges of attempted murder under California Penal Code 664/187(a), along with an enhancement for the alleged use of a deadly weapon (PC 12022(b)(1)). His trial is scheduled for 8 April 2026.
Workplace violence remains a persistent concern in healthcare settings worldwide. In the United States, nurses and other frontline staff report high rates of physical assaults, often from patients or visitors. Advocacy groups, including nursing unions and professional bodies, have long called for enhanced security measures – such as dedicated personnel at nurses’ stations, improved de-escalation training, panic buttons, and zero-tolerance policies backed by swift legal action.
This case underscores the vulnerability of healthcare workers even in controlled environments like nurses’ stations. Experts emphasise that preventing such incidents requires not only reactive security but also systemic changes, including better staffing levels, mental health support for patients, and robust reporting mechanisms for threats.
