Ekiti Assembly Orders Reinstatement of Suspended Nursing Student, Investigates Hostel Fee Hike at College Of Nursing, Ado-Ekiti

By Fellow Nurses Africa News Desk | April 24, 2025

The Ekiti State Govt. through its House of Assembly has directed the immediate reinstatement of Seluwa Oluwaseun Vincent, a 300-level student of the Ekiti State College of Nursing and Midwives, Ado-Ekiti, who was recently suspended by the school management over his involvement in protests against alleged exorbitant hostel fees.

The directive came from Hon. Babatunde Fawekun, Chairman of the Assembly’s Ad-hoc Committee set up to investigate rising concerns over hostel charges and bed space allocation at the institution, which is affiliated with the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EksUTH).

During a meeting with stakeholders, Hon. Fawekun revealed that the suspension of the student had been reviewed, with a resolution for his reinstatement under the condition that he tenders a formal letter of apology. He also announced the postponement of the institution’s forthcoming examinations, saying this was necessary to “ensure justice is served and peace is maintained.”

“This decision was made to safeguard the future of the student and to restore calm within the institution,” Fawekun stated.

Seluwa was suspended earlier this month after leading agitations against a reported hike in hostel fees a move that the school authorities described as “unruly and incitive.” However, the case has gained public attention, with many accusing the school management of student intimidation and victimisation.

Parents and Alumni Commend Assembly’s Intervention

Some parents of students at the institution have praised the Assembly for its timely and responsible intervention, noting that their children had faced threats of being barred from writing examinations over the unresolved hostel fee dispute.

“The school fees are already high. Now the students are being treated unfairly for speaking out. We are glad the Assembly is stepping in,” one parent said during the meeting.

This latest development comes days after the Alumni Body of the Ekiti State College of Nursing and Midwives issued a strong statement demanding an independent probe into allegations of bullying and intimidation of students by the school management. In the statement published on Fellow Nurses Africa, the alumni condemned the suspension of student leaders and raised concerns over what they described as “a culture of fear” being promoted within the institution.

What’s Next?

As the House of Assembly continues its investigation into the hostel fee controversy, nursing students and staff are urged to maintain peace while the issues are being resolved. Hon. Fawekun reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and safeguarding the rights of students.

At Fellow Nurses Africa, we will continue to monitor this story and advocate for safe, equitable learning environments for nursing students across Nigeria.
