Fortis College Unveils 15-Month Nursing Program in Utah to Address Global Shortage

By Fellow Nurses Africa News
October 15, 2025

Fortis College in Millcreek, Utah, has launched a 15-month Associate Degree in Practical Nursing program, set to start in January 2026, targeting the global nursing shortage. The accelerated program prepares graduates for the NCLEX-PN exam to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), offering a quicker, more affordable alternative to traditional three-to-four-year registered nursing degrees.

The curriculum integrates classroom instruction, virtual learning, and hands-on simulation lab training, designed to bypass lengthy prerequisites for faster workforce entry. Graduates can work in hospitals, clinics, or long-term care facilities, according to Fortis.

“This program responds to urgent healthcare demands,” a Fortis College spokesperson said. “It equips students to enter the nursing field swiftly and effectively.”

The World Health Organization forecasts a 5.7 million nurse shortfall globally by 2030, with Africa facing a 4.2 million healthcare worker gap. Nursing education varies, from 12-18 month practical nursing courses in the U.S. to 2-4 year diploma and degree programs in African nations.

Dr. Nkechi Okafor, a nursing education expert, said,

“Accelerated programs can boost staffing but must ensure rigorous training to uphold patient care standards.”

This is critical in Africa, where healthcare systems face significant strain.
