Two Suspects Arrested for Raping and Beheading Nurse Wendy Achumba

FNA News
Obowo, Imo State, Nigeria — May 24, 2026

OBOWO, Imo State — Two men have been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of 21-year-old nurse Chinwendu “Wendy” Achumba, whose body was discovered in her off-campus apartment earlier last week, authorities and community leaders confirmed Saturday.

FNA News reported the grim discovery on May 22nd: Achumba, a post-basic midwifery student at the College of Nursing Sciences in Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area, was found dead in Umuadara village on May 21. She had been raped and her throat slit with such force that she was nearly decapitated.

The arrests mark a rapid breakthrough in the case. Community youths from Umuadara, acting on their own investigation, detained one suspect identified as Onyema Okonkwo, a local vulcanizer (tire repairer) after noticing fresh scratches on his body that appeared consistent with a violent struggle. Okonkwo had reportedly made unwanted advances toward Achumba in the past, which she rejected, according to multiple accounts shared with FNA News.

In a video confession that has circulated widely on social media, Okonkwo admitted that he and an accomplice, identified as Emmanuel Onyekachi, forced their way into Achumba’s apartment around 7 p.m. on the night of the attack. The two men took turns raping her after she refused their demands, he said, before killing her because she recognized them.

“We wanted her to give us sex, she refused,” Okonkwo stated in the recording. “I had sex with her two times, Emmanuel had once. After that, I hit her with a stick… Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her.”

Both suspects are now in police custody.

The Imo State Police Command confirmed the arrests through its spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye. Operatives from the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters worked in close coordination with community stakeholders following an initial distress call. The victim’s body had already been recovered and deposited at a mortuary for autopsy. “Investigations are ongoing to ensure full prosecution,” Okoye said.

Local leaders, including community youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa, who helped lead the effort to apprehend Okonkwo, welcomed the swift action. The development has intensified calls for justice on social media under the hashtag #JusticeForWendyAchumba, with nursing students and women’s groups expressing both relief at the arrests and deep frustration over the vulnerability of female students living off-campus.

This case has once again highlighted the persistent challenge of gender-based violence in Nigeria. While national statistics vary, reports from health surveys and local studies indicate that a significant number of women particularly young students face risks of physical and sexual violence, often compounded by inadequate security in private accommodations and delays in the justice system.

Expert Analysis: Swift community involvement and police follow-through in this instance demonstrate how local vigilance can accelerate accountability when institutional safeguards fall short. However, experts tracking violence against women stress that sustainable prevention requires more than reactive arrests: stronger enforcement of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, routine security assessments for student housing, and expanded support services for survivors and families.

Achumba, an indigene of Ngwa in Abia State, was remembered by classmates as a dedicated and promising young professional. Her death has left the nursing community in mourning.

FNA News will continue to follow the investigation and provide updates as they become available.
