The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has reportedly withheld the examination results of 61 nursing students from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, following an alleged case of examination impersonation.
The development was reported by SaharaReporters on Saturday, September 26, 2026. According to the report, the students sat for an NMCN professional examination about two weeks earlier but had reportedly been unable to access their results after the Council flagged the examination over an alleged impersonation incident.
Sources cited in the report alleged that a person suspected of impersonating one of the candidates was detected during the Council’s monitoring of the examination in Abuja.
The individual allegedly left the examination venue after being detected and had not been located at the time of the report.
According to the sources, the alleged incident led to the results of all 61 candidates being withheld while the matter was investigated. The sources also said none of the 61 students had been individually identified as the person allegedly involved in the impersonation.
The reported withholding of the results has raised concerns because the affected students were reportedly due to proceed to induction into the nursing profession.
AAU disputes report of 61 affected students
However, the university has disputed the central claim.
Otunba Mike Adelegun Aladenika, Head of Corporate Communications at AAU, told SaharaReporters that the university had no record of a case involving 61 of its nursing students.
Aladenika said he contacted several university officials, including the Provost of the College of Medicine, the current and immediate past Heads of the Department of Nursing and the Dean. He also said he spoke with a representative of the NMCN Registrar.
According to him, those officials did not confirm the reported case.
He said the Head of the Department of Nursing specifically told him that the number 61 did not correspond with any group of AAU nursing students affected by examination malpractice.
The university spokesperson also said an NMCN representative he contacted told him that there was no corresponding record before the Council.
AAU also said it held an induction ceremony on Friday involving more than 400 people, further complicating the reported account that the alleged withholding of results had prevented the affected students from being inducted.

The professional examination is an important stage in the transition from nursing education to professional registration.
The NMCN is Nigeria’s statutory regulatory body for nursing and midwifery. Its mandate includes regulating nursing and midwifery education and practice, maintaining professional standards and enforcing discipline within the profession.
The Council’s official registration information states that basic registration applies to nurses and midwives who have successfully completed the relevant professional qualifying examination.
For university nursing programmes, the Council also maintains an indexing system for students and states that students in generic BNSc programmes are indexed for General Nursing before proceeding through the professional examination process.
This means that any unresolved issue surrounding professional examination results can have consequences beyond a student’s academic record. It can affect the point at which a graduate moves towards professional registration and licensing.

The central issue remains unresolved.
SaharaReporters’ sources said the NMCN withheld the results of 61 AAU nursing students following an alleged impersonation case. AAU, however, said neither the university nor the NMCN representative contacted by its spokesperson had a record of such a case involving 61 students.
