What Began as a Hospital Visit Turned Violent
A Texas police sergeant is facing multiple felony charges after authorities say he assaulted three nurses, one of whom was 26 weeks pregnant inside Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital.
The incident occurred on New Year’s Day, a time typically associated with fresh starts, not violence inside a medical facility.
According to investigators, the officer was at the hospital as a patient awaiting an MRI scan when the alleged attack unfolded.
Details From Investigators
Court records allege that during the incident:
One nurse was punched in the face while responding to a routine alert.
A second nurse, who was pregnant, was allegedly struck with a desktop printer, hit again, and later had a computer monitor slammed onto her back.
A third nurse was reportedly punched from behind and knocked to the ground.
The attacks allegedly occurred inside the hospital, not in a restricted or high-risk external area.
Surveillance Footage and Immediate Response
Investigators confirmed that hospital surveillance cameras captured the incident.
Staff reported that the officer appeared detached and unresponsive before the alleged assaults began. He was later sedated, preventing investigators from immediately obtaining a statement.
Hospital security and law enforcement responded, and the nurses received medical attention.
Charges and Official Action
Authorities have since confirmed that the officer has been:
-
Charged with three felony counts of assault on medical personnel
-
Relieved of duty
-
Placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation
The officer’s department acknowledged the charges and stated that internal procedures are underway.
Assaults on healthcare workers have risen sharply in recent years, but cases involving law enforcement officers as alleged perpetrators inside hospitals remain rare, and deeply concerning.
Healthcare advocates note that hospitals are increasingly becoming high-risk workplaces, even for staff responding to standard patient care needs.
This incident has intensified conversations around:
-
Workplace violence in healthcare
-
Protection of pregnant healthcare workers
-
Accountability when alleged offenders are sworn officers
The investigation remains ongoing. Prosecutors are reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements.
Further updates are expected as the case moves through the legal system.
