Beyond Borders: Oghogho Doreen Izedonmwen’s Journey From Nigeria to First-Class Honours in Ireland
From Benin City to University College Cork, Oghogho Doreen Izedonmwen has proven that nursing excellence knows no borders. A proud Edo State native and now an accomplished nurse in Ireland, Doreen’s path is one marked by early passion, grit, and the power of belief.
In this exclusive interview with Fellow Nurses Africa, she opens up about what fueled her dream, the culture shock of international study, and the mindset that took her to the top of her class—all while navigating life as a student and worker abroad.
A Dream Born in the Wards
“I grew up around hospitals,” Doreen recalls. “And I just loved what nurses stood for.”
That early exposure sparked a passion that led her to the College of Nursing at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where she earned her diploma. After two years of clinical practice in Nigeria, Doreen set her sights abroad, earning a Bachelor’s in Nursing Studies at the University College Cork, graduating with First Class Honours.
Studying in Ireland: A Leap of Faith and Focus Relocating to Ireland wasn’t without its challenges.
“Adjusting to a different academic system, a new country, working and studying—it was overwhelming sometimes,” she admits.
But what got her through? Time management, prayer, and community.
“I leaned on my faith and support system when things got tough. Breaks were important too.”
Her resilience paid off, culminating in a First-Class degree—a milestone that affirms the power of determination and a clear vision.
Redefining Nursing: Beyond Bedside Care Doreen’s academic journey shifted her perspective on nursing.
“I used to think it was just bedside care,” she says. “But now I know it’s also about leadership, research, and policy advocacy.”
Her clinical strength lies in surgical nursing, but she’s developing a keen interest in clinical research—drawn by the potential to shape evidence-based practices that elevate care.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for Growth and Impact Doreen isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Her future plans include postgraduate studies—possibly a PhD—so she can merge her love for practice, research, and education.
“I want to contribute meaningfully to healthcare, and hopefully help influence nursing policy someday,” she says with quiet confidence.
Words for Fellow Nurses Across Africa “To every nurse and nursing student out there: believe in yourself. Your experience matters. Keep learning, keep growing, and never stop dreaming.”
Doreen’s story is one of global ambition, grounded in compassion and built on relentless dedication. She stands as a role model for nurses navigating similar journeys—proof that no matter where you start, excellence is within reach.
